LG’s new W53 Monitors certainly have earned the distinction of being named SMART. Each features Auto Brightness which automatically optimizes that and other picture settings, Cinema Mode, which blacks out everything except the video clip, and even a timer that reminds the user to take a break. A proximity sensor knows when a hand is near and activates lights to make it easier to find the buttons and turns them off when it is gone. The displays will be available from 18.5 to 27-inches, with those larger than 21.5 in HD. Look for them to come out this month.

Elgato Turbo.264 HD received
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Accessories, USB, Apple, HDTV, Peripherals,
We were big fans of the original Elgato Turbo.264 hardware encoder, so when we heard that the company had released an updated version, called the Turbo.264 HD, we pretty much ordered one immediately. The product promises to “quickly convert any video into a format that you can play anywhere and share with anyone” and supports HD camcorders, AVCHD, and direct upload to YouTube. We are gonna tear into this one, and report back with our thoughts. Meantime, any questions on the device?

Five technology trends that will define 2009
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Smartphones, Editorial, Features, GPS, HDTV, Home Entertainment, Software,
This is a guest post by LaptopLogic - head over to them to find laptop reviews, laptop news and search their database for the best top rated laptops.
We are nearing the end of the first quarter of 2009, and we think that based on what we’ve seen happen already this year, combined with some announcements of things to come, that we can start to make sense of what 2009 will look like when we look back on it. For instance, we think consumers will see a number of technological advancements in the devices they buy—the laptops, media players, gaming systems, and televisions. That’s always the case. However, we think there are a handful of trends that will dominate the consumer technology market, and we thought we’d take a look at five of them here. Let’s get started:
GPS Everything
It seems that mobile phones and GPS can’t be kept apart these days. With the release of Apple’s wildly successful iPhone 3G, GPS has become a standard feature on many of today’s advanced mobile devices.
While GPS used to be reserved for geeky standalone gadgets, like that of a Garmin or Tom Tom, being able to locate yourself wirelessly is now firmly in the realm of cell phones. And that’s just the start. Expect to see GPS penetrating a greater number of tech devices in 2009.

We thought it most amusing when we learned that Elvis shot his TV when he would see Robert Goulet, but we guess this man took that kind of anger a bit too far. A man in Joplin, Mo. got so irritated at the DTV transition that when he lost his cable and couldn’t get the converter to work, he shot his television. Apparently, he had been drinking at the time, still that was an extreme reaction. He was charged with unlawful use of a firearm.

Studio FRST Double Aspect Ratio 16943 TV
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, HDTV, Home Entertainment,
Studio FRST has come up with an interesting prototype TV. The 16943 displays video in aspect ratios of both 16:9 and 4:3 so that whatever you are watching is properly framed. At a size of 618 x 840 x 120mm, there is a DVD player slot in the side. Placed on a glass stand, the idea is certainly interesting, especially as it would eliminate some of those annoying bars, and the name obviously fitting, but we are not sure that we could adjust to the jarring shape.

More Cable Media to Appear on Internet?
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, HDTV, Home Entertainment, Movies, Music,
Several media companies are considering releasing programming on the Internet for paid subscribers. Such channels as HBO, MTV, Discovery, TLC, and Turner Broadcasting stations are included. Cable TV operators that pay networks a per-subscription fee each month have begun to complain that a lot of that content is free online. President of NBC UTG Jeff Gaspin said that it is important to “find ways to do business that protects that business model.” He added that it would involve a small fee or perhaps be a freebie. Should that be the case, it might mean that you should consider buying a better monitor as opposed to that new HDTV you were considering.
