CES 2008: Powerline Best Home Networking Device

Netgear’s Powerline HD Plus (HDX111) took the award for the Best of Home Networking. It will take an ordinary electrical outlet and turn it into an HD streaming connection. It features an ethernet adapter that can connect to PCs, DVRs, game systems, and Tivos for both audio and video transmission. The Powerline has Quality of Service (QoS) for video, voice, and data and Netgear claims it can transfer files 12 times faster than its previous models. CES 2008: Slingbox PRO-HD

Sling Media, Inc. has announced the newest iteration of Slingbox. The Slingbox PRO-HD is capable of placeshifting over the air, cable, satellite and even DVR HD signals to a computer in the house.
When the PRO-HD is used with a Slingcatcher, the PRO-HD will stream HD content in either 4:3 and 16:9 to another TV in the house, and when the PRO-HD and Slingcatcher are combined with an upload connection speed of 1.5 - 2Mbps, the PRO-HD will stream HD content to another television or computer anywhere, without down-converting the resolution to EDTV.
Slingbox PRO-HD will be available in the 3rd quarter of 2008 with an estimated MSRP of $400.00. We will have some video up of this, along with the Slingcatcher, up on our CES 2008 video page.

CES 2008: Pioneer Kuro HDTV Concept: 50-inch, 9mm Thin Plasma

Billed as being “thinner than last month’s Wired magazine” and similarly thinner than an iPhone, Pioneer unveiled their Kuro HDTV concept model at their press conference today. The 50-inch plasma weighs in at a relatively paltry 41 lbs and just 9 mm thick. They also claim they’ve “made contrast ratios irrelevant” by eliminating ALL idling luminance, producing completely true blacks. We’ll see how it looks later this week, as they’ll have their concept on the show floor but the early photos they have are impressive to say the least.
Since these are merely concepts, they won’t be available for another year or so but it clearly shows the direction Pioneer is going with their form factors and by “obsoleting” contrast ratios.
Look forward to some video coverage on the floor unit once the show opens up.

Westinghouse To Release Wireless HDTV

Westinghouse will soon be revealing the first integrated HDTV. The display features Pulse~LINK’s integrated CWave UWB HDMI technology that will stream audio and video content from DVRs, Blu-ray or HD-DVD players using its JPEG2000 video codec.
Bruce Watkins, Pulse~LINK President and CEO says, “Watching this Westinghouse Digital HDTV – with no antennas or dongles or anything coming out of it except the power cord and a vibrant High Definition image – is an experience much like watching true High Definition for the first time. As soon as they see it, people will want this Wireless HDMI HDTV in their living room.”
Appearing at the CES next week, we will see if the masses are as impressed as Mr. Watkins.

DirectTV Offers Gift to ISS

Talk about great free advertising. DirectTV has decided to endow the newly designed International Space Station’s Harmony module with an HD makeover. If NASA agrees, the company will include access to all channels, a DVR, and a 42-inch flat screen HDTV. An engineer to install the equipment comes with the offer. For the rest of us, DirectTV is offering such online subscription goodies as a $10.00 a month savings over the next year with a free Visa worth $50.00, and 3 months of HBO, Cinemax, Starz, and Showtime with certain packages.

Samsung to Unveil Larger AMOLED Display

Samsung has developed a 31-inch AMOLED (active-matrix organic light emitting diode) screen, their largest thus far. When electricity is applied to organic materials, it creates clearer and brighter images than in LCDs and PDPs. Although the company has been playing around with the technology for a while now and released a smaller version in October 2006, they will probably be showing of their new offspring at this month’s CES. We expect Samsung not to be the last company to explore the possibilities.

Coupons for Digital Changeover Available

It is now only 412 days until the end of analog TV. If you want to receive a coupon good for $40.00 towards the price of an ATCS tuner, you had best get to it. We checked into it yesterday (day one) and noticed that our order was around number 22,000. Since the boxes will not become available until late February or early March, the coupons will be issued then. Up to two per household are allowed and they expire 90 days from receipt. Remember that if you have cable or satellite, chances are the problem will be taken care of for you, but it never hurts to have a back-up plan.

The device can control lights, small appliances, security and temperature settings, home entertainment systems, lighting, surveillance, and ventilation. Panasonic Unveils Humongous 150-inch Plasma Screen

Panasonic is planning to unveil a 150-inch Plasma screen TV. At 2 x 3.5 meters, it is 47-inches bigger than its former large screen panel. Developed by Matsushita, it is big enough to display a full-size human. Available by 2009, it is set to debut as the world’s largest TV at next month’s CES. Sharp currently holds the record with a 108-inch LCD TV but we are guessing that Panasonic just had to have the last word
