QFinderThe GPS QFinder lets you mark a desired location and trace back to it with a digital compass with 8 directional arrows. Mark up to 4 different locations and the GF-Q900 will display the direction and distance to the last one on its LCD display with backlight. The QFinder has a SiRF Star III GPS chipset, 20 channel tracking, is water resistant and runs on 2 AAA batteries. At a price of $79.00, we are thinking this would be a great tool to have during the holidays when you agree to meet up with the rest of your family or to find your car in an overcrowded mall.

Garmin nüviLooking for a last minute gift for Dad’s day? I recently purchased a Garmin nuvi GPS unit for a friend who is navigationally and electronically challenged. These things are so easy to set up that my friend got the hang of it in less than 10 minutes. We went out to dinner and because the restaurant we wanted to visit had gone belly up (no pun intended,) we asked it to find us another. It took about 4 seconds to find one with similar cuisine in the same area.

The positives? Easy learning curve, touchscreen, low cost for smaller models (less than $150.00) and step by step oral instructions. The negatives? Go your own way and the sometimes annoying female voice will chastise you. And occasionally the unit refuses to stick to your windshield. Good thing it’s portable.

Aoyama Gakuin UniversityWhile keeping a cell phone on campus may be good for security reasons in the States, Japan has an entirely different idea. Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo has been handing out free iPhones to their staff and students at the School of Social Informatics. They are doing so to keep track of them by GPS to find out if they are cutting class. The instructors will also use them for homework and testing.
