Matsushita/PanasonicMatsushita has finally decided to become known by what it mostly was all along, Panasonic. The name change will become final this October 1 if the shareholders agree in June. The Osaka company was founded 90 years ago by Konosuke Matsushita, and even current President Fumio Ohtsubo feels a bit sad but commented, “We must create more than what we are giving up.”

Matsushita/Panasonic will also be dropping its local brand name National for large and small appliances by March 2010 to avoid confusion. Our only comment: It’s about time.

ZoombakZoombak understands that two of your best friends are likely to get lost, your pet and your vehicle. Their assisted GPS locator can help you find both. When installed in your car, boat, or bike, should it come up missing or is out of its “safety zone” that you set up, you can track it via their site or 24/7 toll-free number, and eventually through your mobile phone. The cost of the device is $249.95 with a service charge of $10.00 per month. The same service applies if you want to invest in the 2.5 oz. water-resistant pet version for $199.99. We wonder what happens if you forget your pet inside your car and it is stolen.

Baby JesusA baby Jesus statue was taken from a nativity scene in Bal Harbour’s Founders Circle, Florida, although it was bolted down at the time. Cincinnati attorney Jeffrey Harris read about the crime online and generously replaced it with a new one. Dina Cellini, the overseer of the display, has equipped the new figure and its ceramic parents with GPS devices to avoid the same event happening again. We are thinking that this might be an excellent strategy for protecting our lawn gnomes, too.

(Thanks, Mike)

UnidenmenUniden has released a troup of mobile showrooms under the guise of Unidenmen in the town of Shimokitazawa, Japan. Wearing futuristic suits, they strap the TVs to their chests, while their backs feature QR codes so that products can be ordered from mobile phone sites. Placed in 34 different areas, the company is hoping to attract 25 to 30 year-olds who are shopping or bar hopping. This would beat the dorky sandwich signs that are used here in The States, but we would think that those things have to get heavy after a while.
