CES 2007: Finally, Something We Can Use—R2D2 DVD & Projector

Coming from borderline ridiculously awesome territory is Nikko Home Electronics’ R2D2 Projector. The sheer volume of “features” in R2’s shell is astounding: “Safety sensors,” sound effects, fully motorized and controlled by a, I kid you not, Millennium Falcon remote control. With a light-up propulsion system and cockpit light. Wow. Oh, and an integrated DVD player. (What, no Blu-Ray?)
And coming next? An R2 Skype phone.

Bioloid Kits For Robotics Newbies

One of the companies attending the 2007 CES is Robotis, Korean makers of the Dynamixel Series high-performance actuator controlled by digital packet communication. For the rest of us there are Bioloids, which were designed for education of the principles of robotics. The kits contain a main controller, a servo-module dynamixel, a sensor module, SMPS, NiMH rechargeable batteries, a software CD, and a manual, just in case you have a part leftover.
The kits are available in dinosaur, bipedal humanoid, hexapod spider, quadruped puppy, and autonomous exploration. The company boasts that the kits are easy to assemble with a Phillips screwdriver and can be changed as your whim permits without the threads wearing out. Government Awards Honor Japan’s Labor-Saving Robots

Ten robots have become honorees of prizes given by the Japanese government to encourage robotics research and development. Among the prize winners are a factory worker hand robot, an automatic vacuum-cleaner-on-wheels, “My Spoon,” a bot designed to aid the elderly to eat, and Paro, a furry seal which responds to human interaction. Japan sees robots as a method of dealing with its increasing labor shortage and rapidly aging population. Released forecasts indicate that the country’s 127 million population will decline by 30% by 2055 with those 65 or older comprising 40% of it.

iPod Nano Armband Wins Reddot Award

This Apple iPod nano Armband is one of the recently named prestigious reddot design award winners. Strap it to your arm or wrist, plop your nano into it, put on your headphones, and it leaves your hands free to run, bike, or simply figure out how to change tracks while you are doing said activities. Adjustable fasteners make it a one-size-fits-many. Compare this to the Boxwave Flexiskin that we told you about in October of 2005. We would say that although this band is somewhat flashier, it’s is pretty much the same concept. The band is available in white, blue, green, pink, grey, and red at the Apple Store for $29.00.

GPS takes a new turn with these shoes invented by Sayo Isaac Daniel. Referred to as Quantum Satellite Technology, Daniel explains that you can forget your watch or cell phone, but not your shoes. He first got involved with the idea when his own 8 year-old son was missing from school. Fortunately, his son was found and so was a new idea from an entrepreneurial father who was already involved in footwear.
The technology consists of a 2 x 3-inch computer inserted in the shoe which is weather-proof, shock-proof, and can survive up to 300 lbs. of human. It even has a panic button in case of an emergency. The shoes will be available next month in a limited quantity online for $325-$350 and accessible to the general public by March.

A Nokia subsidiary, Vertu’s Signature Cobra series cell phones are surely the most expensive on the planet. Rumored to be the phone of choice by such trend-setters as Madonna, they are made of white or platinum gold and come with a pear-cut diamond, a round white diamond, 2 emerald eyes, and 439 rubies.
Only 8 of the $310,000 Cobras are to be made, so contact Vertu if for no other reason than curiosity. If those are out of your price range, there will be 26 Pythons to choose from for $115,000, which are devoid of rubies.
