How Ford measures space in the new Ford Escape using ping pong balls

This week Ford unveiled its unique approach to measuring the interior space of its new Escape vehicle. The company didn't do away with the more conventional methods, as the ping pong measurement accompanied high-tech laser-scanned CAD renderings as well.
So, why ping pong balls? As vehicle interiors have become more modern, there are a lot more curves and swooping areas in a vehicle. Umbrella holders tucked away in the door, for example, make it more difficult to use the traditional tape measure. So the Vehicle Architecture team headed by Eric Jackson came up with the unorthodox approach.

ChargeCard: The iPhone charger that fits in your wallet

How many times have you been in a situation where your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad was on the verge of death and you didn't have a charge cable with you to charge it up? It's happened to us more times than we'd like to admit, and that's where the ChargeCard comes in.
The ChargeCard has the standard 30-pin Apple dock connector on one side, and a slim USB connector on the other. It folds up to just about the size of a credit card for easy storage in your wallet. End result? You always have an iPhone charger on you. As long as you have a USB port to plug into, you are good.
ChargeCard is currently a Kickstarter project. They've got 37 more days to reach the goal of $50,000, and it's already at $38,456. If you want a chance to get one of your own, you can pledge $20 to pre-order. If the campaign is successful (and it looks like it definitely will be) you'll receive your ChargeCard when it ships in September.

We love 1Password here at Gear Live, and with today's update that brings Retina display support, we're loving it a little bit more. 1Password is the popular password management application from developer AgileBits. The update 130 newly-optimized images, and is a free update to all 3.x users. 1Password is available on the Mac App Store.

Nomiku sous-vide immersion cooker set to bring tender deliciousness to your home

Sous-vide cooking allows you to make super tender, juice, mouth-watering food that's full of flavor after being cooked slowly over a long period of time in a bath of warm water. The thing is, it's been cost-prohibitive to the average home cook. The Nomiku immersion cooker aims to change all that. Already a successful Kickstarter project, Nomiku is set to make immersion-style sous-vide cooking available to the masses when it launches in December of this year for $299. Rather than providing an expensive, limited-space bath, Nomiku clips on to any pot or pan that you want to use for cooking. Check out the video of the product to see how it works, after the break.

Ouya Android-based indie game console takes Kickstarter by storm

Are you bored and tired of the big players in the video game space failing to innovate in truly meaningful ways? Then you'll wanna meet Ouya, the Android-powered game console that will cost just $99 with a controller that connects to your television set just like your Wii U, Xbox 360, and PS3 does. The difference? Anyone can develop games for the Ouya console, and there's no huge financial barrier to entry. That means more indie quality indie games, likely much less cheaper than you'd find on other home game consoles. The product is designed by Yves Behar and team, the same folks who dreamed up the designs for the One Laptop Per Child OLPC computer and Jawbone Jambox. On the inside it's powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, 1 GB RAM, and 8 GB of built-in storage. It also packs 1080p output over HDMI, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Apple set to bring back horizontal iPod nano design with iOS-style home button?

Macotakara is reporting that Apple is set to redesign is iPod nano line, getting rid of the small clip form factor in favor of a more traditional horizontal design. The next iPod nano will purportedly also be about 1/4 shorter than the previous horizontal design, and will also feature a home button, similar to what's found on iOS devices like the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

Pink Nokia Lumia 900 hits AT&T stores July 15th

Today Nokia revealed the pink Lumia 900 Windows Phone device. Set to launch on July 15th, it'll cost $99 with two-year contract like the white, black, and cyan hues of the device. This one is an AT&T exclusive for the time being, so if you're interested, mosey on over to your nearest AT&T store this Sunday to grab one. Remember, these won't be upgradable to Windows Phone 8, but Windows Phone 7.8 will provide many of the visual features that 8 will bring anyway.

Rdio unleashes new lightweight minimalist design

We gave you an early look at the New Rdio redesign back in March during SXSW 2012, and then it was released to the masses just last month. Well, we've gotta hand it to the Rdio team, as they continue to improve the design for the enjoyment of the users. Today, Rdio has refined its design again, bringing more white space and a flatter profile to the forefront. The company says that this makes it lighter, brighter, and easier on the eye. What else? Speed improvements. We've been playing with it for a bit over on the Gear Live Rdio channel, and we invite you to do the same. It's good stuff.

We've had a bunch of leaked images of the purported next-generation iPhone (iPhone 5? iPhone 2012? The new iPhone?), and if the rumors are true, then these 3D renders that were created using the leaked images, should tell the tale of what the device will actually look like--and we think it looks fantastic. The black iPhone gets blacker, with a dark frame, while the white model maintains the chrome frame and aluminum colored back. Get a look at more of the images in our gallery. If you want the 3D model for yourself to play with in your favorite 3D program, you can grab it from Martin Hajek for $50.

If you thought that the placement of anything in an Apple Store by employees wasn't planned with the utmost precision, think again. It turns out that everything, even down to the exact tilt of the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air displays, have an intricate science around them. Get this--each morning Apple Store employees use a leveling app like Simply Angle to help set the tilt of the displays of all the notebook computers to exactly 70 degrees.
