Orbis, the one-wheeled Segway-like transportation device
Posted by Mark Rollins Categories: Design, Transportation,
You generally don’t see people on Segways in real-life, as they remain pretty much banned in the locales where they’d have the highest demand.
Well, perhaps the Orbis Urban Mobility Vehicle will have a better shot as mass adoption. Maybe. As you can see, it has one wheel, so it would take up a lot less space than crowded two-wheeled Segways. It’s also battery powered, so it is environmentally friendly with top speeds of up to 13 mph. It’s also super portable, as the handle can wrap around the wheel, which is pretty cool.

Bungee Jumping Clock: Because Cuckoo Clocks are so yesterday
Posted by Mark Rollins Categories: Design, Smart Home,
The Bungee Jumping Clock is one of those concept devices that I just can’t help but report on. It’s like someone has finally realized that all those nice curio cuckoo clocks of yesteryear have gone, and it is time to embrace an Xtreme sports era.
Besides this picture, this is about all of the information I have on this particular clock. You have to admit that part of you wants to see some guy who throws caution to the wind tell you what time it is.

Unibody MacBook Pro 15-inch finally gets matte display option
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Design, PC / Laptop,
When Apple launched the unibody MacBook Pros, one of the loudest cries we heard from the Mac community was in relation to the loss of the matte display option. You see, while Apple touted colors that “pop” a bit more off of the glossy screen, those of us who like to be, you know, mobile with our notebook computers, cried foul. The problem with a glossy-only option (or lack of option, really) is that if you are using your MacBook Pro in the sun, you essentially have a screen that can double as a mirror.
Well, Apple has heard those cries, and has finally brought a matte screen option to the 15-inch MacBook Pro, something that the 17-inch unibody version has had since the get-go. It’ll cost you an extra $50 for the privilege, and you also lose the black “borderless” infinity bezel around the screen, and instead get a silver bezel like previous versions of the MacBook Pro.

Tivoli introduces new iPAL - now available in yellow
Posted by Finnian Durkan Categories: Design, Home Entertainment, Music,
I love listening to my iPod. Everywhere I go, I have it plugged in - on the road, in my car, on the bus, at work; everywhere. But no matter how much I love having all of my audio/visual media right at my fingertips, there has always been one thing that has bothered me about iPods and all of their associated paraphernalia - they all look the same.
They all resemble something that Eero Saarinen carved out of a block of plastic, polished to a shine, and made available to the public. This is all well and good if you have a condo chock-full of Jetsons furniture, eschewing any and all hard lines in favor of the Apple standard of soft eggshell curved products. I, on the other hand, am a pretty typical guy and have a living space peppered with very angular, semi-broken furniture and accoutrements that make a proto-futuristic iPod docking station look a tad out of place.
Enter Tivoli’s iPAL docking station. Resembling something that would be right at home on a WWII submarine or knocking around in the jungle on a National Geographic expedition; it is the perfect addition to my jumbled, yet spartan living situation. Stacked next to my hotplate and the Zenith TV that I use as the base for my coffee table, it looks perfectly natural - like it was meant to be there. Despite its rugged and retro appearance, it offers amazing sound quality, and also comes with an AM/FM auto-tuner and a NiMH battery pack that recharges in three hours and offers 16 hours of continuous play.
While its price, at $274.04 (192.40 Euro) makes it far more expensive than any of the rest of my furniture, it still looks mighty fine sitting atop my bookshelf made of cinder-blocks and 2x4’s.

Will Alsop Alessi Daytimer Watch - Polygonize Your Wrist!
Posted by Finnian Durkan Categories: Accessories, Wearables, Design, Misc. Tech,
Will Alsop has been designing buildings and public spaces in chic European locales for decades - Hamburg, Marseilles and London to name a few. Recently he has begun lending his designing eye to Alessi, an Italian design firm responsible for a wide range of products too high-end and/or cerebral for me to understand much less afford.
One thing that I do understand, though, is my need for ironic/retro kitsch - and nothing says retro kitsch quite like a neon green polygonal watch. If you are looking for something cool and ergonomic that reminds you a bit of the 80’s yet don’t want to wave your nerd-flag too high with calculator watch then this is the timepiece for you. At $118.48 (83 Euro) it is a small price to pay for a modernized piece of your childhood… if you were a child in the 80’s. Wow, having to preface that makes me feel old. Now where is my Prince - Purple Rain concert t-shirt?

Nissan Leaf: Zero Emissions, Total Affordability
Posted by Mark Rollins Categories: Design, Transportation,
I think we all know that cars are one of the worst polluters on the planet today, and so I find it nice of Nissan to introduce the greener Leaf, a car that has zero emissions. The Nissan Leaf has a lithium ion battery-powered chassis that is good for 160km (100 miles) on a single charge. Best of all, its lack of a tailpipe can reduce one’s “carbon footprint” significantly. I don’t have a price for it yet, but it should be “affordable” to the family of five that it has room for. The car is slated to launch late next year in Japan, the United States, and Europe.

AtoD Battery - Form Fitting Rechargeable Concept
Posted by Finnian Durkan Categories: Accessories, Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech, Science,
For those who have been clamoring, nay, shouting for rechargeable batteries to be made more user-friendly and versatile, your day is close at hand. Enter the AtoD Battery, a brand new memory-foam encased Nickel Hydroxide Rechargeable. At 1.5 Volts it packs the same power as a AA, but with one substantial difference: its memory-foam casing allows you to shape it to match any size battery from AAA to D. The starting size is that of a standard D battery, so while it may prove versatile it does present one small drawback: lag time in re-inflation. Just make sure that you have the size right before you impress your friends by smashing a battery with your bare hands only to discover that your their Wii remotes take AA’s and not AAA’s.
No release date has been named as of yet, but you can expect plenty of memory-foam laced witticisms from your local newscast (“Remember Memory-foam?”, etc.) when it is. If nothing else, this may portend the re-introduction of ‘D-Battery Night’ at your local ballpark - not even Phillies fans could turn these into weapons.

LG Whistle LV7500 phone lets you get creative
Posted by Mark Rollins Categories: Smartphones, Design,
Every once a while, you’ll encounter a great device, but it won’t be available anywhere where you live. Case in point: the Whistle phone from LG, which is releasing in the South Korean market.
I’m not certain why it is called the Whistle, as it emits no piercing sound other than its ringtone. Clearly, its biggest selling point is the 115 LED lights on the front panel, which will allow the user some pretty creative options that you see in the photo. The phone measure in at 102.8x51.5x14.9, packs in an internal 2.4-inch QVGA display, and the LED panel on the outside is 5x23.
Other features include automatic international roaming service in 18 countries and a car diary function, all for a price of $322.

Split Stick two-sided flash drive
Posted by Mark Rollins Categories: Accessories, USB, Design, Storage,
I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty dependent on my USB flash drives. Except for the amount of storage they hold, most of them are pretty much the same. The Split Stick is different because it is double-sided.
So the user gets 4GB of memory, but it is divided into two 2GB partitions, if you will. That might be good if you want to differentiate your files, or if two people are sharing one stick. The Split Stick is available for $19.99 in colors of orange, blue, pink, red, black, violet, grey, or green.
