A couple of new Wii commercials should start hitting the airwaves in the next week or so and previews of the commercials have been uploaded to YouTube. The commercials do a good job of highlighting the personalization aspect of the Wii, something that really hasn’t been touched on in previous ad campaigns. With added advertising coming soon, will Nintendo step up the console supply to the United States?

The second commercial is linked after the jump.

Ouendan 2

One of the more interesting and quirky titles to hit the Nintendo DS last year was the rhythm game Elite Beat Agents, which was a follow-up to the successful Japanese title Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan. At the GDC, iNiS Vice President of Development Keichi Yano spoke about the process in localizing and adapting a uniquely Japanese title for American audiences, and Gamasutra has a summary of his remarks. Yano talked about his first title, Guitaroo Man, which gathered a cult following in the US, but never sold particularly well, and his move to portable platforms with Ouendan. In localizing Ouendan, Yano apparently experimented with a number of different looks for the Agents in the game, including a set that looked somewhat like the Village People. Yano also dropped some hints about the upcoming Japanese sequel to Ouendan as well; it seems doubtful that the game will have a direct port in the US, but certainly a lot of the ideas for the Japanese sequel could be used for a future Elite Beat Agents 2, should one be developed. For those that enjoyed Elite Beat Agents, it is definitely worth importing the Japanese original, if only to see the origins of Yano’s music game.

The main software title that Phil Harrison used to demonstrate what he believed to be the key differentiating factors for Game 3.0 was the Media Molecule title LittleBigPlanet. Scheduled for release in 2008, with a demo coming this fall, the title shows off an amazing visual design and overall look-and-feel, with impressive physics modeling as well. But beyond the normal gameplay, Sony’s hope for the title is that it will encourage community contributed content in the form of user-designed levels featuring custom designed environments. Overall, the game got a huge response from the GDC keynote crowd and looks to be one of the strongest console-exclusive titles coming to the Playstation 3.

Home

Last night, Sony officially unveiled the PlayStation Home service, and it basically confirms a lot of what was said before. 1up has coverage of the new service, and from a high level, it is Sony’s attempt to tap into online game matchmaking, the success of Nintendo’s Mii avatars, and online content generation, all in one service. A high level description really doesn’t do the service justice for what a user can accomplish with the free online service, but 1up gives some great details about how PlayStation Home will operate along with a number of screenshots. More details are being revealed by Sony’s Phil Harrison at the keynote of the GDC.

Lumines IILumines II has been out in the United States since November, so it seems a bit surprising that Japan is just getting the game now. The other shock, according to Siliconera, is the vastly depleted number of music tracks and videos for the Japanese release. Siliconera indicates that a number of the US and European songs have been removed in Japan, most likely due to licensing issues, with some Japanese replacements. It appears that for music selection, the US edition is the most complete of the three releases. Luckily for users in other territories, PSP game titles aren’t region locked, so those outside the US willing to spend a little more for an import version can get the most “complete” version of the game.

GTA The GamePolitics blog has received excerpts from a new meta-analysis of the various studies attempting to link video game play with aggressive behavior. The study’s researcher, Christopher Ferguson has dissected 25 recent studies on video game violence and found that in general, while video game playing increased aggressive thoughts support for a link between game play and actual behavior was limited. Overall, those studies that employed better standards for measuring aggression showed lesser effects from video game play. Ferguson also found that publication bias played a large role in the studies; studies that showed stronger links seemed to be favored over those that did not.

Spore ScreenshotIt might not be the most gamer-oriented interview of all time, but at 8 full pages, this interview with Will Wright, the designer of Sim City and the upcoming Spore, covers a lot of territory and contains some interesting discussion of gamer interactions, the social nature of games, game theory, and the risks of the game industry. He also gives his opinion on a lot of current trends, like the Wii’s control scheme (he likes it), and Second life (interesting, but he doesn’t have enough time for it).

This is a great read for anyone in the game industry or anyone who’s just interested in the sociology of games.

With a new release in the Final Fantasy franchise hitting the DS comes another limited edition DS bundle. When Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings launches for the DS in Japan on April 26th, a special limited edition package including a laser etched Nintendo DS and the game will be available, selling for 21840 Yen, about $180 US. Expect huge lines in Japan for this release; Revenant Wings may be even more popular than the Final Fantasy III and Nintendo DS combination.
