When I first read MobilePC’s “Greatest Gadgets” article in the magazine’s print edition, I remember thinking to myself: “This is one of the best gear articles I have ever read.  Thank God I didn’t cancel my subscription.”  Two days later, I find out that anyone can find the same article for free at the magazine’s website.  Highly informative, entertaining,  and a must-read for anyone with even a remote interest in consumer technology.  I still won’t cancel my subscription…just in case something else comes up.

  Who would’ve thought there would be a day when a 5.1 digital camera is considered “entry-level.”  Well, that’s what Nikon is calling one of their six new cameras, the Coolpix 5600, coming in March for $279.95.  It will feature built-in image improvement technology, red-eye removal, and a D-Lighting feature which compensates for insufficient lighting.  The camera is also equipped with a blur warning and an alert feature that informs the user of a ruined shot due to a handshake. Okay, here is the skinny on the Olympus m:robe 500 that you saw insanely odd commercials for during last nights Superbowl - so you can stop emailing me about it now! Anyway, as you saw, the m:robe is basically a digital camera with an MP3 player built in (or an MP3 player with a camera built in if you prefer it that way). It has a 3.7” touch-screen, which probably isn’t the best interface in the world. The camera is 1.3 megapixels, with no flash or zoom. The supposed draw here is that you can synchronize pictures to your music to create futuristic remixes. It should be PlaysForSure compatible, and the battery lasts for about 12 hours. You can grab the 20 GB m:robe 500 for $499.99 USD or less.

As if we didn’t already have enough views of grid iron brutality, Fox Sports’ coverage of this year’s Super Bowl (Feb. 6) may include pictures from miniature cameras embedded in the actual field turf.  Fox’s executive vice president Bill Brown recently announced that they will install 12 miniature cameras, mounted on angled tubes the size of eraser-heads throughout the field.  This way viewers will be able to see what it’s really like at the ground level, especially where the cameras line up with the line of scrimmage.  They’re hoping to catch maybe 5 or 6 plays where this happens.  It turns out that the cameras were already used in last summer’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game and during the playoffs and World Series, without any interference.

Kodak has recently introduced a revolutionary concept in digital photography. Their new 4 megapixel EasyShare-One camera will feature wireless connectivity built in so that users can transmit their photos wirelessly to any computer, printer, or compatible Wi-Fi enabled device. Featuring 256 megabytes of built-in storage, and the largest screen on any camera yet, this $600 machine will be released later this year. The card to allow wireless connectivity will cost an extra $100. The LCD touch screen will swivel, and includes a stylus for use. Sounds great, but $700 bones for a 4 megapixel camera with Wi-Fi isn’t exactly a steal.

  Pretty soon, we’re going to be flooded with lots of news on all the new gear products coming out later this year and beyond.  It’s because the annual Consumer Electronics Show opens up this week in Las Vegas.  The show runs January 6-9, and features a messload of exhibits showcasing the latest in everything from BlueTooth technology to home theatre to WiFi.  Some of the major products that debuted in past CES shows include plasma TV’s, HDTV, CD’s and DVD’s.  It’s just huge, with some 129,000 attendees.  Special events to look out for this year include a pre-show keynote speech by Bill Gates, and a show-floor gaming competition.  Speaking of games, PSXExtreme reports that details on the Sony PSP’s US launch, pricing, and titles will all be revealed at the show.
