Smartpants’ Frame Makes Sideways Upright

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Accessories, Cameras, Misc. Tech,
This Father’s Day, you might want to get Dad something larger to show off his photographic skills. Smartparts’ SP15MW Digital Picture Frame has a 15-inch screen with a 24-bit, 1024 x 768 resolution and an automatic, variable speed. Smartparts claims that the frame is compatible with all memory cards, and can hold up to 256 MB of built-in flash. It features hidden speakers, a remote control, and OptiPix Pro software that automatically rotates vertical images if your camera contains an orientation sensor. Seeing as how Pop takes many of his pictures in a rather inebriated state, we wonder if the frame will really know the difference.

The DXG-711, Just Your Basic Affordable Camera

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Portable Audio / Video,

Almost every camera company has a least one digital camera with enough basics to make it affordable. Taiwan’s DXG has joined those ranks with their model DXG-711. The digital camera features 7.1 mp, a 2.5-inch display, a 3x optical zoom, a 10 second self-timer, and can hold 32 MB of memory. The company has tossed in a minimal amount of audio and video recording capability and combined it into a case that is less than an inch thick. The DXG carries the affordable price tag of $149.99 and runs on 2 AA batteries.

LG will be launching its Wine Phone in Korea, which features enhanced voice-calling and SMS sending. It also sports a 2.2-inch LCD, double-sized buttons, speaker, and word format. Four buttons serve for the frequently used applications of voice recording, setting, alarm, and schedule. The phone will be debuting June 25 for somewhere between KRW 300,000 (~$322.00) and KRW 400,000 (~$429.00.) The target selling group is 30 to 40 year old consumers. I guess LG realized that at that age many of us are approaching bi-focal age. Our thanks to them for reminding us.

Tom Bihn Imago is Useful as Well as Ornamental

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Accessories, Cameras, Design, PC / Laptop, Product Reviews,

I now know why other Gear Livers were raising such a fuss. Tom Bihn’s Imago Messenger Bag, featured here in steel/cork/deep blue, is amazingly functional while being way more than aesthetically pleasing. At a size of 14.5 x 12.25 x 3.5-inches and a weight of only 1 lb., 9 oz., you can fit a laptop (preferably within one of their cells,) and/or a camera with all your accessories inside its roomy olive interior with two pockets. Then again, maybe you can just share the Designer Bag with your cat. There is also a zippered pouch in the front, a pocket in the back, and a ring to clip your car keys (hooray!) or one or more of their organizer pouches. Check out more details and images after the jump.

Cheeseheads Reach Across the Pond

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Internet, Misc. Tech, Videos,
Don’t ask us to explain it, but apparently people love watching cheese mature. Cheddarvision made its debut in December, and has had more than 1.2 million hits. What is the big deal? A 23-kilogram (~50 lbs.) slab of the dairy product is sitting in a dark storage barn in Westcombe, London, aging as a webcam keeps track of the event. It gets adjusted once a week to keep it’s shape. It also has its own MySpace with almost 860 “friends” and a time lapse of its first 3 months on YouTube.
“People from all over the world are e-mailing us about the cheese. Somebody has written lots of songs about it. It has been invited to a wedding. We’ve had post cards sent to it,” said its owner Tom Calvar.
Mr. Calvar, how about you get in touch and we can discuss the future of your cheese with some of those rabid eBay fans?

Greet Your Buds with Yodio

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Smartphones, Internet, Music,

This appears to be the latest idea in spam just by using your cell phone. With Yodio (created out of the terms “you” and “audio,”) you record an MP3 audio tag line on your phone, call the website and post it, add images and captions, and send it to unsuspecting folks’ e-mail addys or blogs. If you just want to use the beta service to wish your parental unit a happy Mother’s Day in a 2 minutes or less e-card, Yodio is free, but if you want to create a mini-commercial or tour you set a price, and Yodio will pay you royalties.
The only problem here is that you can only use the tool on their site and must link to it to see your work of art. To get you started, the site has a practice run and is now offering a $10.00 reward if you can get five people to view your creation.

Brica Reveals New All-In-One

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Misc. Tech, Movies, Music, Portable Audio / Video,
Brica has come out with an All-In-One that sounds cool but may be just too good to be true. It features a Video Recorder that creates 320 x 240 ASF files from DVD or TV, a 2 megapixel still camera, an image viewer that displays JPGs, an FM mono tuner, a sound recorder for MP3 files, an eBook Viewer that can read TXTs, and a PictBridge connection for printers. Available in black or silver at a price of $265.00, what even disturbs us more than its meager capacity of 512 internal memory is the combination, for we remember how difficult it was to repair our ailing TV/VCR combo when the recorder only needed a new belt.

Web Cam Concept Also Marks the Time

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Design, Misc. Tech,

These diminutive guys are just too cute to be only a concept. Designed by Eric Zhang, the Bubble head Web Cam comes with its own ladder to attach it to a nearby shelf or monitor top. It has a flexible copper skeleton and skin of thermoplastic polyurethane so you can play with it between viewings. When it is idle, it displays a LED clock so you know when it is time to muss up your hair, contact your mum, and beg for a little extra stipend this month. Eric told Gear Live that the cam is now in development by his own company and should be out in about a month. Eric, we are just too jazzed and hope you save one for us.
