Digital Converter Organizes Slides and Negatives

Convert all those old slides and 35mm film negatives up to 1,829 DPI into digital JPEGs with a single scan. The USB 2.0 converter can take all those boxes of clips and family albums and transform them into something smaller and permanent. The 5MP Cmos sensor features 10 bits per color channel and comes with software for editing, resizing, and correcting with Photoshop. Go Green with United Pepper

Green is Good. Definitely the newest buzzword, there is a trend now to create gadgets that are not only functional but good for the environment. Some companies rely on guilt, but others seem to believe in what they sell. Created in Vietnam and designed in Belgium, United Pepper’s accessories are made of paperboard, cotton, and Kapok, a natural tree-fibre. Their Oscar USB 2.0 hub and LILI 1.3 Mpixel webcam are completely recycleable, energy efficient, and composed of fairtraded goods. It doesn’t hurt that they are cute, either. Matsushita Undergoes Name Change

Matsushita has finally decided to become known by what it mostly was all along, Panasonic. The name change will become final this October 1 if the shareholders agree in June. The Osaka company was founded 90 years ago by Konosuke Matsushita, and even current President Fumio Ohtsubo feels a bit sad but commented, “We must create more than what we are giving up.”
Matsushita/Panasonic will also be dropping its local brand name National for large and small appliances by March 2010 to avoid confusion. Our only comment: It’s about time.

We could go on all week just on the award winners, but we thought it best to let you snoop them out on your own at the CES website. We didn’t want to neglect some that we have mentioned previously on Gear Live, such as the LtWv Wrist Vmote, the waterproof Sanyo Xacti E1, and the iRobot Looj gutter cleaner. Our congrats to the companies that won as well as the CES that has grown in status from the little trade show that could into a national phenomena.

Digital Camera Mask Takes Underwater Shots

Anyone who has attempted underwater photography knows that getting a good shot is not the easiest thing in the world, especially if your instinct is to swim far away from a creature that looks like it wants you for a snack. Liquid Image has come up with a solution by designing a scuba mask with a cam built-in and tempered glass goggles with cross hairs to get a perfect shot.
The Digital Camera Mask features a 5 megapixel camera that can shoot 18 to 25 fps VGA in high and low resolution down to a depth of 30 m. It holds 16MB flash memory, has auto-off, and displays what you shoot on LCD. If you need more memory, add a microSD card. After you capture, you can simply download by USB, although ArcSoft Software is included for editing. The mask needs 2 AAA batteries (not included) and carries a MSRP of $99.99.

Spare Batteries Fly Under New Rules

There are now different rules if you intend to fly this year with spare batteries. Here are the basics from the our ever-wary government and the FAA:
- Spare batteries are the batteries you carry separately from the devices they power. When batteries are installed in a device, they are not considered spare.
- You may not pack a spare lithium battery in your checked baggage.
- You may bring spare lithium batteries with you in carry on luggage - see our spare battery tips and how-to sections to find out how to pack spare batteries safely!
- Even though we recommend you carrying your devices with you in carry on baggage as well, if you must bring in one in checked baggage, you may check it with the batteries installed.
While all this seems a bit too obvious to us, we figure that the elementary way of explaining the rules isn’t just for the casual business traveler. Check the site for more details.

Nokia has announced its new 6263 available through T-Mobile. The clamshell has a 2.2-inch, 16 million color QVGA display, an XHTML brower that can handle your e-mail, support for Java, Flash Lite and Bluetooth, and can be synced to your computer with its PC Suite software. It also features a 1.3 megapixel cam with video recorder, an FM tuner, and can hold up to 350 music tracks with its 512MB memory. The 6263 has a battery that can handle up to 3 1/3 hours of talk time or over 11 days of standby.
