WSJ: The iPhone 5 will support 4G LTE in multiple areas worldwide

iPhone 5 LTE

This afternoon, the WSJ is reporting that Apple's iPhone 5 will indeed support LTE. There's additional good news for frequent travelers:  it will support more LTE bands for global coverage throughout the United States, Europe, and Asian markets. Currently, Apple offers two flavors of LTE for the third generation iPad, which also runs on both Verizon and AT&T networks.

It has been rumored that Apple will incorporate Qualcomm's latest telecommunication chip into the iPhone 5, the MDM9615, which was built on a 28 nanometer architecture. Compared to what is currently available, the new silicon boasts lower power consumption and a smaller footprint. This could explain why most Android phones were rushed into the market. In the last couple of years, LTE smartphones have become beefier in size in order to house older generation LTE technology.

Another interesting point, the Qualcomm MDM9615 incorporates support for voice and data on a single chip. To date, the only United States carrier to offer Voice-Over-LTE or VoLTE, is Metro PCS in some selected cities. The advantage of LTE voice is that it produces HD quality voice calls. It is  unclear at this time if Verizon or AT&T are VoLTE ready.
