Mexico Trades Games for Weapons

TepitoLast month police stormed Mexico City’s inner-city barrio of Tepito, seizing an entire tenement complex. Now the police department has come up with a plan to reduce some of that drug-related violence. They have offered to exchange computers or video game systems for guns.

Launched Tuesday police chief Joel Ortega says he will swap a computer for anyone who turns in a high caliber weapon. Those with smaller guns receive an Xbox. One hundred computers are available for the initial swap. On the first day of the program, 17 guns were turned in, including 12 of them from Tepito.
