Once again the innovation of the iPad creators has caused everyone to salivate at the mouth for a bite of the Apple. As such, tablets have become the hot ticket this year, though many of which failed to be worthy of being mentioned in the iPad’s presence (we’re looking at you, Archos.) However, there have been some tablets commendable enough to be spoken in the same breath as Apple’s pad, and the Dell Inspiron Duo aims to not only share that airspace, but one-up it as well.

The Inspiron Duo is a “tri-mode” device. This means that it is all at once a laptop complete with a keyboard and 10.1-inch display; a movie screen with an optional dock; and a touch-screen tablet separate from the laptop design.

What divides this tablet PC from the rest of the pack is that it does not simply swivel, but it is completely removable from the frame of the laptop. Dell is boasting that this pioneering design is more than just an aesthetic, as it proves practical in maneuvering from touch to type within seconds. Other uses allow it to be used in conjunction with the Inspiron duo Audio Station docking bay for easily listening to music; browsing through your holiday photos; and parading around as an alarm clock. The Audio Station also doubles as a 7-in-1 card reader with two USB 2.0 ports and an Ethernet adapter. Oh, and it charges your Inspiron Duo as well.

The specs of the Inspiron Duo includes: a 10.1-inch touch display with a resolution of 1,366x768 pixels; Windows 7 Home Premium; a 1.5GHz Intel Atom processor; a 1.3-megapixel webcam and digital microphone; 2GB of DDR (double-data rate) RAM; hard drive options of 250GB and 320GB; Wi-Fi; and optional Bluetooth and 4G mobile broadband.

Sam Burd, the vice president of Dell’s Consumer, Small and Medium Business Product Group, stated that, “Dell is changing the shape of computing, with products that usher in new experiences and allow people to stay connected to each other and the content they love from almost anywhere."

Furthermore, Brad Brooks, the corporate VP of Windows consumer marketing at Microsoft, relayed:

"The work done to develop Dell's innovative new Inspiron duo is evidence of our close partnership efforts, combining the versatility and adaptability of Windows 7 with the creativity of Dell's unique flip hinge design to create a distinct and exciting new form factor. Given that the Microsoft Store has been named the exclusive retail partner during the holiday season, we're excited to extend this collaboration to offer this one-of-a-kind design to holiday shoppers."

Dell’s Inspiron Duo is available now in the United States for $549 without the dock and $649 with it. Eager hands in the UK can get a hold of this tablet-PC starting Dec. 2nd
