If there’s one thing we like about Japan, it’s how their wicked cool technology meshes with their interesting pop culture preferences. We think the Pimpin Ain’t Easy watch from TokyoFlash fits into that category. In fact, just about every TokyoFlash watch meets that criteria. They go out of their way to come up with some of the most interesting ways of telling time that we’ve seen. In this episode, we give you the rundown on the Pimpin Ain’t Easy watch. It features 72 lights, which make it nice and bright. The time is read by reading the hours on the left hand side, and the minutes on the right. It takes a little getting used to, but it’s definitely an attention-grabber.

Here's how to get the show:

Animasher

We would love to do more animation if we could get the hang of Adobe or afford the software. We found a beta site recently, Animasher, that can make even the most incompetent into an instant cartoonist. You drag and drop objects around the frame, add background, text, music, special effects, and/or speech. Adjust them individually for time and placement, save, and voila! You got

game

animation. We wonder if ATHF started this way.

Bent FestivalThe Bent Festival in New York City recently celebrated its fifth annual event and was attended by both newbies and experienced benders. For those who have never heard of them, benders take items such as 80’s Casio Keyboards and TI Speak & Spells and turn them into musical instruments.

“Circuit bending is a really great entry point for people into electronics,” says Mike Rosenthal, a graduate student in NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program. We think it is a dandy way of recycling, although we must admit we played with our Speak & Spell as much as our kids did, and don’t know if we could watch the transformation.

Walgreen's BillboardAs if Times Square isn’t garish enough, a new addition is being built. Standing 341 ft. tall and weighing 250,000 lb., the billboard will have 12 million LEDs (~17,000 sq. ft.) and sing the praises of Walgreen and its new 16,200 sq. ft. emporium. They are hoping that the store will be open and the billboard lit up by next fall, and estimate that it will be seen by 1.6 humans a day. We figure it is going to take a lot of $5.00 prescriptions to pay for the sign.

OS X 10.5.3

has just released the latest batch of stability, compatibility, and security updates for OS X Leopard, all wrapped up in the 10.5.3 update. On my Mac Pro, the update is clocking in at 420 MB, so it’s a hefty one. That is understandable though, because there are quite a few fixes in this one. Some that stand out to us include things like improved reliability, screen sharing fixes, and a few Spaces improvements. We’ve got the full list for you after the break, if you are interested. Otherwise, fire up Software Update to get the latest and greatest.

Windows 7 disc layout 2

So, word on the street is that part of the first day of the All Things D conference tonight will be the unveiling of the first time of the Windows 7 operating system by Microsoft. To be clear, we shouldn’t expect Windows 7 any sooner than 2010. That said, what is shown is very much a work in progress. If you can’t wait for the video footage, which we are sure is soon to come, we also have a bunch of Windows 7 screenshots in our gallery.

We see a lot of concepts in these images. An expanded bar at the bottom of the screen, an -like dock, some sort of disc-based nav system that reminds of the OS, etc. Still, nice to see that things are progressing.
