PC VirusKeep your eye out for phony Hallmark greeting cards sent to e-mails as they seem to be on the rise again. If the notice says you have to load a .zip file, you know you have a problem. The Trojan .zip releases a postcard.exe and a run key to Windows. When you restart your PC that key releases evilness upon you and the program adds you to an IRC botnet, accesses your contact list, and sends out even more attack e-mails. While we realize this is nothing new, we thought we would warn you on the chance that you believed someone actually remembered your birthday.

HoverboardNow you get a piece of “Back to the Future” with one of the original Mattel Hoverboards used in the film. It is in used but good condition and made of hand painted wood and metal with textured styling. It features a rear ball bearing-mounted footpad that rotates 360º and the bottom “magnet plates.” Available on eBay until August 1, you have to be a super Marty McFly fan as they are expecting bids between $30,000 and $50,000.

My Pocket ChargerDuracell is apparently trying to understand that there is a specific need for speed charging. Their My Pocket Charger needs two AA batteries that you load into the device, then connect to your MP3 player, cell phone or other electronic device and they rapidly recharge it. The portable power source comes with two of their Coppertop batteries and we found one of the iPod chargers at Comp USA for $19.99 after instant $3.00 rebate. We see a problem here in that you have to toss the batteries after they work their magic. Would that Duracell could stick to more environment-friendly products.

Northern Lights

Anyone who has seen the Northern Lights knows that they are truly incredible, so it’s almost a bummer that they have found out what they actually are. Scientists at the University of California say they are releases of stored energy that happen when stressed magnetic field lines change into a new shape. The researchers say that this occurs more than 100,000 km away. To catch and study the phenomenon, identical satellites were used to trace the sequence from its initial substorm to the appearance of the colored lights.

Say goodbye to your old virtual pet. Bio.Genica has created Genpets, which are bioengineered genetic animals. They use Zygote Micro Injection to combine DNA, then put it into the little creepy critters. Each “fetus” has a microchip embedded to control and monitor life functions. It comes packed with its own heart monitor and Fresh Strip to better gauge its state while hibernating.
