DS In A Half-Shell, Turtle Power!

Now that you’ve been convinced to buy a DS twice (you HAD to have the original DS when it came out, and now you’ve GOT to get the DS Lite), what are you going to do with that DS Phat? Give it to your girlfriend? Sell it for a third of what you paid on eBay? Or how about putting your creative juices to work and coming up with the coolest DS mod ever!
4ColorRebellion is reporting on a DS owner who painted up their original DS to look like a Koopa Troopa shell, and the results are absolutely stunning and gorgeous. Just keep in mind 4Color’s words of wisdom:
Please do not confuse this mod with an actual Koopa Troopa shell. Jumping on it repeatedly while on a stairway will not help you rack up infinite lives. It will just piss off your parents.

More Controversial PSP Advertisements Coming

Sony seems to be hiring a lot of edgy marketers over in the UK, and their advertisements for the PSP have been taking a lot of heat recently. Sony had 45 complaints filed against it for its original PSP ads, which said things like “Strong language and scenes of a sexual nature here”, “Your girlfriends white bits here”, and my vote for the worst “Take a Running Jump Here”, which was placed next to some subway tracks.
Evidently Sony wasn’t fazed by this negative press, as they’ve gone ahead and started posting the ad above (currently spotted in the Netherlands), which features a white woman aggressively handling a black woman and looming over her as an advertisement for the white PSP. I think most folks would agree that the ad is a little bit distasteful. But hey, at least they didn’t go so far as to have anyone dressed in KKK garb (yet).
Perhaps Sony is taking to heart the mantra that any press is good press, but I wonder how long it might be until they start alienating some of their potential customers.

Bit Generations Site Up (in Japanese)

We reported earlier on how Japanese members of Club Nintendo (those lucky bastards!) would be able to test the latest in retro-GBA games, the Bit Generation Series. It seems that the series is getting more serious, and perhaps the testing is done! - Nintendo of Japan has just launched the official site for Bit Generations, which can be found here. The good news is it’s got some pretty pictures and icons for the new games. The bad news, of course, is that you won’t be able to read it unless you can read Japanese.
According to Joystiq, the site says that you’ll be able to purchase the first set of games for about $17 (so look for it in that price range on eBay!), on July 17th, and the second set will show up about 2 weeks later for the same price. Here’s hoping that these games don’t have a ton of Japanese menus. It looks like they could be great fun to try out once they make it over the Pacific.

Jamie Wilson, aka chronorox, filmed his speed run through the last castle in The New Super Mario Bros. He was able to get from the castle gates, to Princess Peach’s side in 105 seconds. The acrobatics are particularly impressive! Don’t watch the clip if you don’t want to see the ending of The New Super Mario Bros.

Do you have a desire to play your original NES games on the go? Can’t be tasked with remembering where you put all those tiny cartridges Nintendo has re-released your favorites on? Ben Heck has got the solution for you! Ben has been known previously for his portable reincarnations of the NES, PSOne, and the Nintendo 64. Ben claimed his fame by taking the guts of your “sit on the TV stand consoles”, and placing them into custom made portable enclosures! His latest creation is a portable NES known as the nPod. The unit runs off your original NES cartridges and is roughly the thickness of two stacked cartridges. The nPod includes a headphone jack and runs off 4 AA batteries. While this thing is amazing and would let me get more use out of the 15 or so NES cartridges at home, I’ll be sticking with my DS Lite. However if this gets your gaming thumbs twitching, then shoot Ben an email, since he is potentially selling these for around $250.

Uno Coming To The Nintendo DS

It turns out Uno isn’t just for your Xbox 360 anymore. This October Uno, Skip-Bo, and Uno Free Fall will be coming to the Nintendo DS. The collection of Mattel games will be on one compilation cartridge, letting you get your on the go Uno fix quite easily. Not a whole lot of information is available, but we can definitely imagine Uno taking advantage of the DS microphone for calling out Uno before your online opponent. Can the mobile version of Uno be as addicting as the Xbox Live Arcade counterpart? I wonder how many people are playing Uno for the first time on a console, and if a console is the future of card games.

DS Lite Sales in UK Somewhat Lackluster

Compared with the sales numbers we’ve been seeing in the States and in Japan, the Nintendo DS Lite’s sales numbers in Britain are somewhat disappointing. Nintendo sold 35,000 DS Lites in its opening weekend - about 40% as many as were sold when the original “Fat” DS debuted. Compare that with the US, where the DS Lite sold 136,000 units in its first two days, which was roughly comparable to the performance of the original DS when it came out. Retailers in the area aren’t too disappointed though, especially considering the fact that much of the nation is currently glued to their televisions for the World Cup.
We thought that Europe knew they had a good thing when Nintendo announced the ultra-sleek black DS Lite for that region only! Surprisingly, only about half of the DS Lites sold in the UK were black. You’d think the Brits would at least snatch them up so that they could fetch a pretty penny (or pound) on eBay.

Nintendo DS Browser Mini Review

On July 23rd Nintendo is releasing the Opera browser for the Nintendo DS and DS Lite in Japan. The package will retail for about $33 USD and includes a DS “cartridge” with the browser on it and a GBA cartridge which holds memory for the browser. An individual who has some connections in the Opera community was able to score some hands on time with the new browser and has posted his initial reactions.
When I started it up I was browsing in dual screen mode. Basically the page was fit to the width of the screen and the height spanned both screens. With an easy touch of the stylus you can switch into a “zoom” mode where you are presented with a picture of the web page on the top screen and on the bottom screen you can drag a box around to see in actual size what you need to view. You can also simply swap the screens so that you can type in text as needed where fields or check boxes etc. are presented.
Jon answers even more usability questions and includes a lot of other answers about the operation of a browser on the Nintendo DS. Anyone else have trouble reading that browser instead of Bowser? With the naming prowess they have recently shown us I am surprised its not called the Bowser browser.

Tomb Raider: Legend for PSP $19.99

Tomb Raider: Legend came out today for Sony’s PSP and is already a steal! Fry’s Electronics has Tomb Raider: Legend on sale for just $19.99 starting today. The offer is limited to one per customer and it is unknown how long the deal will last. Tomb Raider: Legend on the PSP is currently selling for $39.99 at Bestbuy and most other gaming outlets. Lara Croft’s latest has received average reviews by the usual suspects and I have yet to get a hands-on for the PSP version but it looks promising for a $20 investment. In other Tomb Raider news the remake of the original Tomb Raider that was thought to be cancelled has been confirmed as being back on track for release.

Mojodo DS Lite Game Buyers Guide

The good folks over at Mojodo have put together yet another Nintendo DS Lite essentials list. The list does a good job of breaking down major DS titles into 3 categories; Buy, Consider, and Skip. The titles are further broken down into touch based games, traditional games and multiplayer offerings. Recommended purchases include Trauma Center, Advance Wars DS, and Mario Kart DS to name a few. The focus on games makes for a great companion to 4 color rebellion’s DS Lite Buyers Guide and well worth checking out for new Nintendo DS Lite owners!
