App Store downloads

Well, if you were curious just how successful the has been since its launch, Steve Jobs spilled the beans in an interview published in the Wall Street Journal this morning. First and foremost, the most amazing part is that sales in the App Store hit about $30 million. Now, if you think about that figure and realize that only keeps 30% of it (well, 30% of sales of apps that aren’t their own), that is $9 million for Apple, and $21 million for developers.

Of course, a large percentage of apps downloaded are free. You just know those have to be popular, right? Well, we didn’t get an official breakdown of free app downloads versus paid, but Jobs did say that there have been over 60 million downloads from the App Store. That’s an average of 2 million downloads per day, every day. If you had any doubt that the App Store would be a hit, well, there’s your proof.

EcobuttonPeople who leave their computers on 24/7 have a new gadget that will save some energy. Attach the Ecobutton to your PC via USB and if you leave your desk, it will put your computer on “ecomode.” Even better, it will record how much power, money, and carbon units you have saved. Tap a key and it turns back on. Made from recycled plastic, it will keep track of the last time it was used and the total over time. Guilt just doesn’t get any better for £14.95 (~$29.00.)

David Piper

Remember when we told you about Ian Usher? Now David Piper is following suit by auctioning off his life on eBay through August 11. Originally, the Lord of Warleigh placed an ad in the International Herald Tribune in 2002 seeking a mate and received more than 2,000 replies. However, the one he chose didn’t work out. After being diagnosed with prostate cancer, he plans to move to London for treatment and figures he should get about £6 million. Items include six acres, contemporary art, a waterside residence with a view of the Channel, his two Bentleys, and possibly contact info on those ladies he turned down.

(Oddly enough, when we went back to the eBay site, it claimed that bidding was over. Maybe the chap has decided to remain the master of his domain.)

Doggyspace

If you love your pup, and we mean really love her/him, then you will want to join Doggyspace, a cross between Facebook and MySpace for canines. You can create a profile, share photos and videos, and meet others who are similarly obsessed. Launched last month, 3,000 dog fanciers have already joined the site and there are claims that there will be about 2 million by the end of the year. While Doggyspace is free to join, Founder Levi Thorton plans to make premium accounts with a percentage of the fee going to animal charities. We really don’t know what paying the extra means, but we assume that gives you a top dog.
