How secure is your cellular phone’s voice mail? If your cell phone provider is T-Mobile or Sprint PCS it may not be as secure as you think. Recently hackers have found a way to access your voice mail by simply spoofing your phone number using caller ID spoofing systems such as CovertCall and Telespoof. Sprint and T-Mobile give users the option of enabling auto voicemail login where the user may log in to their voice mail automatically when calling from their own cell phone. The authentication system is simple – it uses the user’s caller ID to validate the number. If the caller ID matches your cell phone number, then it will log you in automatically. To prove that this is what hackers doing, they were able to access Paris Hilton’s voice mail as well as Vin Diesel’s voice mail after the events of this past weekend.

MobilePC Presents The Greatest Gadgets of All Time
Posted by Hector Martinez Categories: Accessories, Cameras, Smartphones, Handhelds, Misc. Tech, PC / Laptop, Portable Audio / Video,
When I first read MobilePC’s “Greatest Gadgets” article in the magazine’s print edition, I remember thinking to myself: “This is one of the best gear articles I have ever read. Thank God I didn’t cancel my subscription.” Two days later, I find out that anyone can find the same article for free at the magazine’s website. Highly informative, entertaining, and a must-read for anyone with even a remote interest in consumer technology. I still won’t cancel my subscription…just in case something else comes up.

Well, maybe it isn’t really much of a hack since all it takes is for Paris to leave her mobile device laying around. Nonetheless, this is a great find. Why? You get to see all the pictures Paris takes using her Sidekick, which includes girl-on-girl action. You get to see the kind of notes she leaves to herself, which reveals that she even had unprotected sex once (gasp!), as she needed to remind herself to get a “birth control kill pill”. Oh, and you also get a peek at her entire address/phone book - and she has quite a few you might know of. Ashlee Simpson, David Lechapelle, Ashley Olsen (where’s Mary Kate?), Christina Aguilera, Vin Diesel…or you can see the email addresses of people like Usher. I, for one, am still waiting for a call back from Lil Jon. Careful with the link, as some content may not be appropriate for minors - or for work.

The day many were waiting for has come. The Sony Ericsson S710a has been launched by Cingular. The phone was supposed to be launched in December, but after a long wait consumers can now get their hands on one of the hottest phones Sony has to offer. The S710a is a feature rich phone which includes the following:
- 2.3 inch 262K color TFT display
- Swivel-style design
- EDGE high-speed data
- 1.3 megapixel digital camera, 8x digital zoom
- MemoryStick Duo card slot
- Bluetooth
On the downside – the price is set at $449.99 with a 2-year contract, $499.99 with a 1-year contract and $549.99 without a contract. At a price higher than true smart phones, we can only ask – what were they thinking?

Boost Mobile has launched a limited edition i860 handset by Motorola with classic ‘60’s surf-style wood paneling. Aside from the gimmick, the i860 still looks like a pretty decent phone, with a hands-free speaker, 4X digital camera, and walkie-talkie capability. Even though it’s a limited edition phone, $499 does sound pricey though. I mean, you could pick up the Treo 650 for a little less, actually. I suppose novelty always comes at a price.

Check it out, you can now use Mobile Web on your Verizon Wireless phone, and not pay the $4.99 per month charge to Verizon to do so. In fact, this is a perfectly legal alternative, because you are simply using a different server than the one Verizon Wireless provides. This hack works for any Verizon Wireless phone that supports Mobile Web 1.0 - 2.0. All you need to do is go into the setup menu and make a couple of changes.

EDIT: I should have been more clear. Use MobileWEB4U to find out how to access the appropriate menu on your phone where you change servers. Once you find the menu, enter a proxy server. You can find one at http://www.publicproxyservers.com.
You must also enter both the proxy server address as well as the port it uses. If you don’t have both, it won’t work.
Mobile TV Approaching Reality for US Via Action Engine
Posted by Hector Martinez Categories: Smartphones, Portable Audio / Video,
While channels will initially be limited, Action Engine is taking some steps in providing on-the-go TV content - at least on Windows Mobile handsets - for the US. Their service is basically Internet TV that streams video via a Windows Media Server, which is different from handsets that feature a built-in analogue tuner. Currently, Windows Media is restricted to certain content providers, in this case Amazon.com, eBay, FOX Sports, and the Microsoft MapPoint Team. Developer SmartVideo is looking to expand the content to include other national programmers like MSNBC and CNBC, ABC News and ABC News Now, The Weather Channel and DIC Entertainment.

World’s First Bluetooth Sunglasses: Oakley RAZRWire
Posted by Hector Martinez Categories: Accessories, Smartphones, Wireless / WiFi,
Wires on our devices are still a pain. Just last week, someone accidentally snatched my headphones right out my ear when they walked too close to me. If that wasn’t enough, people who wear sunglasses are even more limited, because generally only one device can loop around your ear at any one time. Today at 3GSM Motorola and Oakley announced their new line of premium Bluetooth wireless technology, sure to keep you connected and cool at the same time. The Oakley RAZRWire is simply a pair of Oakley’s that have an earpiece attached to the frame, allowing you to talk on your cell phone wirelessly. The device is expected in the second half of 2005, and will be available in three different frame colors. No word on the pricing, but the word “premium” should hint to that.

The 3GSM is going on today, and that means there are a crapload of new cell phone announcements to talk about - one of which is the new Motorola PEBL V6. What’s so exciting about it? Before we get into the specs, Motorola continues pushing the cool factor of their new phones with this one with its double-hinged mechanism which enables you to open the phone easily and stylishly with one hand. The phone has integrated Bluetooth, EDGE support, a 262k color display, 5 MB on board memory, an MPEG4 VGA video camera, a POP3/IMAP email program, MP3 ringtone support, and it measures 49mm x 86.5mm x 20mm. Look for the 110 gram stone-shaped PEBL V6 in the second half of 2K5 (that’s 2005 for the layperson).

Continuing on with the whole “2005 is the year of convergence” thing that the tech industry is currently into, take a look at Pantech & Curitel’s PH-L4000V camcorder/cell phone. It includes a 2.1 megapixel camera, and is supposed to be able to record camcorder quality video clips to mini MMC. Of course, many people can have a different idea of what camcorder quality actually means.
