WolframTonesWant to see what algorithms look like when translated into music? That is exactly what WolframTones is all about. It takes programs from Stephen Wolfram’s computations and turns them into tunes. No matter how many times you select a type of music, you will get a new permutation and mini-light show. Create rock/pop, jazz, classical, piano and other compositions and adjust pitch, time, and instrumentation. If you would like to play or find out how the phenomenon was created, check out his site.

MoMA Elastic Mind

Speaking of MoMA, not only are they exhibiting the likes of AT&T and Nokia at the museum, there is an incredible display online. Combining science with design, there are over 300 concepts in Elastic Mind that are translated into physical objects. The purpose, they say, is to “combine research with attentive consideration of human limitations, habits, and aspirations.”

All we know is that spending a couple of hours on the site may not have the impact of seeing the show itself, but it certainly is worth the time. For example, in Collection for the Lonely Man, it includes the Sheet Thief, which winds up the bed clothes to the other side. Others are Cold Feet, Heavy Breather, Plate Thrower, and Hair Alarm Clock that will run hair across the user to wake him.

Globe EncountersOnce again, science has crossed over into the area of art. MIT has teamed with AT&T to create New York Talk Exchange, which debuted this week at the Museum of Modern Art. The NYTE measures the volume of IP and telephony that goes in and out of the city anonymously. It then is portrayed visually at the museum as well as on the Internet. Globe Encounters displays NY’s connections to other cities globally. Pulse of the Planet shows how they alter during a 24 hour period with time zone changes. The third exhibit studies the five boroughs and how they vary.
Studying the data shows that New York tends to “reach out and touch” Asia and South America, whereas London concentrates on New York and Europe. They are hoping that it will help in studies overall in the area of globalization. The display will be active through May 12.

YouTube logoPakistan has decided to block YouTube from its country’s usage because of offensive Islamic content. In fact, its efforts have been blamed for the site’s Sunday two hour blackout. Owner Google claims that it was because of “erroneous internet protocols sourced” from Pakistan Telecom and its PCCW Internet provider. Anyone trying to access the site was diverted to another address. Unfortunately, other countries also felt the effect until YouTube was notified of the circumstances. Pakistan joins Turkey in its censorship, and although Thailand recently lifted its ban, some content is still blocked.

EA-Land logoThe Sims Online has become the new and improved EA-Land. Electronic Arts launched the site in 2002 but it seems to have gotten lost in the Second Life shuffle. Learning from their mistakes, you can now upload content, add a widget to Facebook, utilize their virtual real estate market, and blog to your hearts content. Considering Electronic Arts’ recent troubles with Take-Two Interactive Software, we suspect that EA has decided that they do not want to count all their eggs in the same basket.

Mozilla has now released their Beta 3 based on Gecko 1.9, which they have been working on for the last 30 months, after almost 2 million lines of code changing. They are now encouraging feedback for those who are brave enough to download it. After some initial testing and bug correction, they are planning on Release Candidate versions.
