There is already lots of feedback on Microsoft comments pages after the launch of IE8, with some it negative, from disappearing images, printing on Web sites and searching issues. One user complained about dragging Facebook applications and photos while others complained about the install. On a positive note, one user said it “felt like Firefox, but hey, it’s functional.” We also found that IE8’s release really hasn’t affected Firefox as their users are eagerly awaiting 3.0.

Quietly, SpiralFrog stopped croaking last Thursday. The company had been in trouble last year and issued secured notes to borrow about $9 million. Launched in August 2006, the site offered free downloads and featured advertising to pay for the privilege. It launched with Universal and took almost 2 years to add EMI. While the weak economy and having CEO changes may be part of the reason for the demise, it probably didn’t help that the files were DRM-protected.

Sony Adds 500,000 Books for Reader

Sony is offereing its Reader users half a million public domain books. The Google optimized books are added to the 100,000 already available for the e-book. Included are such titles as “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court,” “The Awakening” and “The Letters of Jane Austen.” Google has been encoding books in the open electronic format ePub to make such titles more available to Sony and other e-book distributors.

Internet Explorer 8 now available

We ask that you try and contain your excitement on this one. You ready? Microsoft has just released the final version of Internet Explorer 8, the company’s home-grown web browser. According to Microsoft, IE8 is “one of the fastest browsers on the market today.” Of course, that really can’t mean much, as there are really only a handful. Being “one of” the fastest doesn’t sound like too confident a statement. A few things you can expect out of IE8 are Web Slices, Accelerators, and Instant Search.
IE8 has been in beta for over a year, so let’s hope this final release is as good as it should be, at least as it pertains to security, and, you know, displaying websites correctly.

Firefox Shiretoko to Be Postponed?

It is possible that the next Firefox release, code named Shiretoko, may be a 3.5 instead of 3.1. It is also possible that Beta 3 will not be the last. New features include tab searching via its bar, some minor theme retouches, an “about me” page and the ability to clear more precise history. Firefox’s Mike Beltzner says that the version postponement has not been finalized so we shall see.

Carsforagrand.com has collected hundreds of those that are being sold for less than $1,000.00. Choices include American made and foreign, older, crashed and parts cars and the listings are updated daily. Search by brand or zip code to find one in your area or subscribe to their newsletter. We tracked a couple of the deals and traced them to eBay, but at least the legwork is done.

For the die-hard procrastinator, there is a new beta site that will help you to get things done. With ForceDo, you create a to-do list and set a mini-deadline. That begins a countdown and if you don’t get to the task on time, it will issue an audible alert and let you know how much time remains before you can really be called a deadbeat. While the site claims it is not yet perfected, it would love to have feedback about it and if you have suggestions, send them along, too.

Clever 15 year-old David Nelson has devised Muziic Player, a free interface that allows you to download tunes from YouTube. With the encoder, you only need to drag and drop or browse through MP3 files and press “encode.” There is also a search bar for single or artist and other features include playback and volume control, and playlist management. You can even go as far as adding an album cover by dragging and dropping JPG, .BMP or .PNG images. Unfortunately, YouTube is not thrilled with the idea.
A YouTube spokesperson claimed, “We’re looking into it now. On a preliminary review, however, it appears that the site violates our API terms of use.”
Here’s hoping that they can work something out so that the technology and David’s hard work will not go to waste.

MocoSpace Survey Shows Effect of Social Networking

The site MocoSpace asked 10,000 of its users questions about their relationships. The results have some interesting answers such as 45% admitting they have used their phone to break up with their partner, mostly by text. Now we realize that because MocoSpace is a social networking site does not necessarily make it an unbiased survey. Even if that is the case, we still found these additional responses amusing:
- Men are more likely to break up via mobile than women.
- 73% admit that their cell phone is the most important device in their social life as compared to 2% who answered their computer.
- 34% admit to flirting with someone else while on a date via their phone.
- While most admitted they make new friends mostly in the “real world,” 19% say mobile connection is also important.
