3D-Seek3D-Seek is a new search engine from Imaginestics that enables industrial customers to quickly and easily search parts catalogs based on sketches, CAD drawings, or existing online drawings.  Essentially the electronic equivalent of doodling on a napkin, the online sketchpad allows you to draw a rough equivalent of what you are looking for and pattern recognition technology does the rest.  What would once take hours of searching through catalogs and speaking with parts vendors trying to describe what you’re looking for, now only takes seconds.  Of course, if you can’t draw much more than your average stick figure, uploading a CAD drawing of your search criteria is always an option.  With around 6,000 items in the current index, new items are being added on a regular basis by vendors and the search portal’s web crawlers.  Once this kind of technology is firmly established, we can see the potential for it moving into areas that can benefit the average consumer as well.

TextPayMeWow, is this service long overdue or what? TextPayMe is a PayPal-like service that allows you to send and receive money by simply using SMS over your mobile device. Even better, they are currently giving anyone who signs up a free $5.00 deposit into their TextPayMe account. Here are a few of the suggestions they offer for using the service:

  • Split restaurant bills on the spot
  • Settle your roommate’s rent and utility bill from wherever
  • Pitch in real money for a split gift rather than an IOU

We will definitely be giving this one a spin. Having the ability to do this from wherever you are using your mobile phone works a lot better than having to sign in to Paypal from where we stand. If you sign up soon, you can qualify to be in the running to win a free Xbox 360. An Xbox 360, plus an additional five bucks for free? What’s not to like?

osx86 forumsIn a follow-up to a story we posted last week, the folks over at OSx86 Project are back online and the forums have been restored.  It seems that Apple was primarily concerned with just a few posts that had some links pointing to some warez that the Apple Legal Department didn’t take to kindly to.  In the end it seems things were settled amicably and nobody’s feelings, animals or children were hurt in the process.

Apple doesn’t “have it in” for our site; they were simply concerned with a few links posted by our members. Those links have been removed and we’re back.

You can read the full story as well as OSx86’s point of view on how news of this event was misreported by the media, at their site.  Welcome back OSx86!

Microsoft FrontPageIt looks like Microsoft is finally going to take their FrontPage web design software out back, and put it to pasture. According to PC World, Microsoft FrontPage sees the end of it’s life cycle with the release of Microsoft Office 2007, formerly known as Office 12. FrontPage became popular in the mid-ninties, when people were just starting to realize what the internets were all about and decided they wanted a piece of the action. This was the first mass-market WYSIWYG web editor on the consumer level. Once Dreamweaver was noticed by the masses, FrontPage became seen as a joke. I mean, who wants 15 font tags in a block of text that only requires one?

In the spirit of all things gadget related, we thought this would qualify as something you would want to see.  This Evil Knievel Female just happened to have her video camera running when Mr. Fast and Furious wannabe decided to get sideways in front of her.  Needless to say, she didn’t have much room to maneuver and here’s the result.  A quick warning - we don’t recommend you try this at home kiddies, it could leave a mark or two if you know what we mean.  At least she was sportin’ some leather and a helmet for the ultimate in safety gadgetry.  You go girl…

Description

Yeah, we know…you have all the coin from that big IPO just laying around doing nothing but burning a hole in your pocket.  But damnit, the Porsche site sucked so you just refused to buy a new 911 based on principle.  Well fret not my wealthy technorati gurus, Porsche has a smokin hot new site, “the Masterwerk”, just for your viewing (and drooling) pleasure.  It is quite a symphony of technology, detailed information, and visual seduction.  Whatever you do, do not forget to check out the gallery, the new pics are most excellent, large and quite tasty for that big honkin monitor sitting on your desk.

Nintendo DS Opera Browser

Earlier this morning, Nintendo officially announced a couple of new enhancements that the Nintendo DS will enjoy. First, an Opera-based web browser will be released for the system, more than likely as a purchasable cartridge. This one is expected to hit the market in June, retailing at about $30 USD. Nintendo also announced a TV tuner cartridge that will be able to receive and display One-Seg broadcasts, which Japan will be adopting in just a couple of months. We have yet to see any information on pricing or release date for the tuner, but we do have a few images of the product after the jump.

Gear Live Bleeding EdgeSo here it is - the first episode of Gear Live’s new video show, The Bleeding Edge. This episode is packed with a ton of interviews that we shot at CES, including:

  • Major Nelson Interview: We had the opportunity to catch up with our friend Larry Hryb - Major Nelson to the layperson - to ask him about what his CES experience was like. Major had been pretty much tied to the Xbox area in the Microsoft booth, but he took a few minutes to talk to us about Fight Night 3, Dead Rising, and Street Fighter II on Xbox Live Arcade.
  • DualCor cPC: We have a look at the amazing DualCor cPC. This may turn out to be an OQO killer, as it is a handheld Windows XP computer that also runs Windows Mobile 5.0 on a separate processor, allowing the user to switch between the two OSes with the touch of an icon.
  • Netomat Hub Service: Netomat’s Hub is an online space where you can create “hubs” to get and share picture and text messages, as well as content such as news feeds and blogs with a friend or your own private group of friends. You and your friends can view and update your hubs using a PC or a mobile phone.
  • TiVo Series 3 First Look:We got some quality hands-on time with the forthcoming TiVo Series 3, TiVo’s first HD-capable DVR. The Series 3 unit has some cool new features, including a single-color, two-line OLED LCD display on the front of the unit that shows you what’s being recorded on each tuner. We interviewed Bob Pony of TiVo (TiVoPony on the TiVo Community forums) about what we can expect in the Series 3, so be sure to check out the video interview above. The quick and dirty is that it features built-in ethernet, an external SATA port for expanding your TiVo’s capacity, and that it will ship with a 250 GB hard drive.

flashphonef2k
If you’re a fan of Skype, then you might be interested in the MPLAT Flashphone F2K.  With a size similar to that of a USB memory stick, the F2K includes a built-in soundcard and flash memory in sizes from 128MB up to 512MB.  Operation couldn’t be easier as you simply plug it into an available USB port, plug in the headphones and launch Skype.  All necessary software remains on the Flashphone, and no traces of activity are left behind on the host computer which makes it ideal for the paranoid among us.  Obviously this isn’t the most ideal method for making a call as it requires access to a computer, but if you don’t have the monetary resources for a PDA, or are just a diehard Skype user, the F2K may just do the trick.  Be sure and read the review though as upgrading the software on the F2K may be akin to rubbing your tummy and patting your head at the same time - not impossible, just difficult.
