Maxim Eva LongoriaUsers of Google Earth have yet another sweet Easter egg to scout out. In celebration of their 100th issue, Maxim has reproduced one of their magazine covers to the measure of 75 feet by 100 feet, featuring a scantily-clad Eva Longoria. The headline reads “The only magazine big enough to be seen from space—and only in Vegas!” This is one, um, big publicity stunt.

IO-Data Qwatch

I-O Data is introducing three new webcams, dubbed Qwatch, for remote surveillance purposes.  Two of the webcams, the TS-MCAM and TS-MCAM-G models, offer up pan, tilt and zoom capabilities, UPnP for easy administration, USB 2.0, and Ethernet.  In addition, the TS-MCAM-G model also provides wireless access in the form of 802.11G.  Both cameras can be accessed via the Internet and by mobile phone, enabling you to keep tabs on your subject matter from practically anywhere.  A hard drive can be connected to the Qwatch’s USB port, to which surveillance photos of your

neighbors

subject matter can be saved for future reference.

The third camera in the Qwatch series doesn’t compare in features to the other two and isn’t much of a camera at all.  It’s a dummy, designed more for deterrence than surveillance, and contains a couple of glowing/blinking LEDs as its only functional parts.

No word on availability outside of Japan, but pricing is as follows:
TS-MCAM   - ¥26,400 (~ $225 USD)
TS-MCAM-G - ¥31,700 (~ $270 USD)
TS-MCAM-MU - ¥9,500 (~ $81 USD)

Google is preparing to launch a music download service, according to research firm Caris & Company.  It is rumored that Google has been meeting with leading music executives for “networking opportunities.”  The new site is expected to gain support from the music industry, as iTunes does not offer flexible pricing or a subscription service.  Rumors were also confirmed at a recent analyst meeting where Google highlighted plans to expand into downloadable media.

Cinema Now & MovielinkTwo movie download services, Cinema Now and Movielink, have announced that they have entered into licensing agreements with major studios.  Cinema Now has inked agreements with Sony Home Pictures Entertainment and Lionsgate Films, while Movielink has signed with Warner Bros., Universal, Sony Pictures, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox and MGM.  Of the seven studios that Movielink has signed with, five are in joint ownership of the company.  In addition, both companies have non-exclusive licenses with other studios and licensors.

With digital media comes heavy DRM implementation and Microsoft’s DRM software is the system of choice for both services.  Rentals from either company are yours to watch as many times as you wish during a 24-hour period which begins the moment you first start to view a film.  Purchased films are storable indefinitely, but neither company allows the movie to be burned to a DVD for playback on a standard player.  Movielink does allow their movies to be transferred onto 2 additional computers for playback, with the copies being managed by their Movielink Manager software.

Cinema Now has better pricing with purchased movies being offered for $9.95 to $19.95 and rentals going for $2.99 to $3.99.  Movielink on the other hand, charges more with purchasable movies going for $20 to $30, and rentals for $0.99 to $4.99.  (All prices quoted are in US dollars.)

DRM complications aside, with purchases prices rivaling and often exceeding that of a movie on DVD, it’s doubtful that traditional rental services like Netflix and Blockbuster have anything to worry about . . . for the short term.  Oh, and put away your trusty Firefox or other Internet browser as both services only work with Internet Explorer.

As an owner of a Smartphone, I was personally outraged that iAnywhere Solutions did not offer a client for my platform.  It seems that the wait for Avantgo goodness is over; iAnywhere Solutions announced today that there is a beta client available for Windows Smartphone.  The beta supports Windows Mobile 2003, 2003 Second Edition and Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone handsets.  Unfortunately, the feature set is reduced due to the lack of a touch screen and the maximum display resolution on Windows Mobile devices. There are over one thousand content providers available though, which should make up for some of the features that are not available. You can grab the beta at the link below.

Scrubs iTunesFor those keeping tabs, Scrubs is now the latest show that is available for purchase on the iTunes Music Store. While there is no Season Pass option as of yet, you can purchase Season 5 episodes starting now. The back story on this one is unique as well, since NBC has made the Touchstone Television (owned by Disney-ABC) produced series available on the Internet. This marks the first such partnership for a prime-time series to be made available for commercial purchase via download. Snazzy.

So, let’s be honest - we have all heard of RFID technology by now. To further your education, Spychips is a site dedicated to informing the masses against the possible dangers that exist with this new technology.  RFID has infiltrated everyday life, unbeknownst to most. Stores like Wal-Mart use RFID for things like inventory management, and as an anti-theft device.  Some of the things that Spychips.com reports on are a bit one sided, but its interesting to see how this technology could be potentially damaging to our privacy.  If you do not look out for your civil liberties, and privacy, no one else will.

YouTube Ten Minute CapLooks like Internet phenomenon YouTube is looking to cover their bases a bit more as it pertains to copyrighted material. Anyone who has used that service knows that, while you can find many an amateur Jackass-ish video on the service, you can also view full-length television shows (and in some cases, movies.) YouTube has been feeling the heat for this recently, and has responded by placing a ten-minute cap on all uploaded videos.

Well, if you’ve followed our blog postings or any of the press articles, you know we’re constantly trying to balance the rights of copyright owners with the rights of our users. We did some analysis of the videos in our system over 10 minutes in length, and we found the overwhelming majority of them were full length, copyrighted videos from tv shows and movies. However, we also recognize that there are legit content creators out there who may have videos over 10 mins, so we’ve created a Premium Content Program for those of you with professional-produced videos.

Obviously, it is a tough job for YouTube to screen each and every video that is uploaded - so this may be a step in the right direction. What do you think?
