Astronaut Douglas H. Wheelock, the man responsible for the first FourSquare check-in from space, has been brought social media technology into his explorations again by tweeting some of his observations from high above the planet, revealing some stunning images over the past few days. Here are just a few of the beautiful Earth images Wheelock captured during his journey in space. Above is the Isle Juan de Nova in the Mozambique Channel between Madagascar and the African mainland.

Google is once again trying to show that location services are really important to them with the release of Google Hotpot, a social recommendation engine for Places. According to Google, this service will provide recommendations "powered by you and your friends" to businesses and locations you happen to be near. Right now, Google Places mostly provides information and facts about restaurants, clubs, banks, or anything you can find on a map, as well as imported ratings from outside sources like Yelp. Hotpot adds the ability to like or dislike a location on the spot, and provide your opinion. Then, the engine will present that additional information from your social circle. The new feature is available on Android phones now and on the web, and uses your Google account to allow you to rate businesses.

GoDaddy changes default domain from .com to .co for a day

Yesterday one of the biggest domain registrars, GoDaddy, switched their default domain registration service to .co instead of .com. This means that when anyone searched for a new domain to register, the first response they would get is a .co domain instead of the usual one. While the company calls it a test, it's easy to guess that they are planning to shift away from the crowded .com domain space. Let's face it, anyone who wants a domain name now is likely to find their first choice will be already taken as a .com, which isn't surprising with almost 100 million registered names.

The Wall Street Journal published a report last week saying that the Obama administration could make a move that is being called a turning point in privacy oversight. The White House is pushing for new privacy laws and a new position to oversee the matter, an Online Privacy Watchdog. The US Dept of Commerce is currently said to be drafting a series of recommendations that, if made into laws, would add a significant layer of protection for consumers's privacy when dealing with online services, everything from buying items online and giving out your credit card information, to how sites like Facebook or Google handle your personal data. While nothing is final yet, this would bring the US in line with other countries like Germany and the UK who already are tackling the online privacy issue.

Microsoft Silverlight changes focus to Windows Phone 7

Silverlight has been Microsoft's "Flash killer" for many years now, and as a web-centric platform, it's had very little traction. Most sites stuck with Flash, and those who didn't, moved onto HTML5, not Silverlight. Now, after neglecting the platform for a while now, Microsoft officially said that the focus for Silverlight is shifting to other areas.
In the words of Microsoft's Bob Muglia “Silverlight is our development platform for Windows Phone.” The platform is indeed the way developers are making apps for the mobile platform, but for those developers who had been building web based apps based on the technology, it may come as a bit of a cold shower. Still, this seems like the right move, as it's clear the web is moving on to the open HTML5, and away from proprietary technologies like Silverlight.

In perhaps the only instance in America where it is okay to sell sex for money, Clover Holdings Ltd successfully bid on the Sex.com domain name up for sale by its owners Escom LLC.
Escom was forced to sell the incredibly valuable domain name after filing for bankruptcy. In May, Escom hired Sedo.com to help find buyers for the domain name which they bought for $14 million back in 2006.
The deal has not yet been accepted by the bankruptcy court, but we suspect that it will soon be finalized. Whatever Clover Holdings Ltd plans to do with the domain name is not known, but whatever it is, we’re sure it will be sexy.

TiVo finally launches online Season Pass Manager

We don’t know what took them so long, but TiVo just announced the availability of their new online Season Pass Manager tool, which allows you to manage your season pass subscriptions right from your browser. Even better, if you have multiple TiVos, you can transfer subscriptions between the two. This feature is long overdue, and should have launched alongside the release of the TiVo Premiere—but hey, that thing has enough problems on its own, and maybe that’s what TiVo has been spending their time on, because it sure could use a bunch of optimizations so it isn’t seen as a half-baked product anymore.
