We first told you about Animasher in May but were cautioned by co-creator Martin Jacobson that we got a little too excited too soon. However, he let us know that the Beta launch is now official. Simply choose pictures, drag and drop, add music and sound effects, and you could be the next Monty Python or JibJab rival.
We understand that the Animasher originated in Sweden when Martin’s programmer friend Samuel wanted to make fun of him online. Nine months later, Animasher was born. It must be some friendship to inspire an entire website, eh?

iArthouse Launches Streaming Video

Now that Netflix has cut back on Indy cinema, this might be a good time to check out iArthouse. They have over 800 international and arthouse films and plan thousands by the end of the year. They offer ad-supported free streaming video, subscription, and download-to-burn options. Download their free StreamBurner software and start shopping from film companies such as Vanguard Cinema and Arts Alliance America. We really dig that they offer online free screenings of such classics as “M,” Hitchcock’s “39 Steps,” and “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.”

Remember when we told you about Ian Usher? Now David Piper is following suit by auctioning off his life on eBay through August 11. Originally, the Lord of Warleigh placed an ad in the International Herald Tribune in 2002 seeking a mate and received more than 2,000 replies. However, the one he chose didn’t work out. After being diagnosed with prostate cancer, he plans to move to London for treatment and figures he should get about £6 million. Items include six acres, contemporary art, a waterside residence with a view of the Channel, his two Bentleys, and possibly contact info on those ladies he turned down.
(Oddly enough, when we went back to the eBay site, it claimed that bidding was over. Maybe the chap has decided to remain the master of his domain.)

Doggyspace is for Doggy Lovers

If you love your pup, and we mean really love her/him, then you will want to join Doggyspace, a cross between Facebook and MySpace for canines. You can create a profile, share photos and videos, and meet others who are similarly obsessed. Launched last month, 3,000 dog fanciers have already joined the site and there are claims that there will be about 2 million by the end of the year. While Doggyspace is free to join, Founder Levi Thorton plans to make premium accounts with a percentage of the fee going to animal charities. We really don’t know what paying the extra means, but we assume that gives you a top dog.

DTV4PC Means Online Viewing

When is free not really free? When it is DTV4PC for Windows XP/Vista. With it you can receive 1,056 live television channels from your PC. Using streaming media, choose between 186 streaming channels, 55 movie channels, local networks, 35 sports channels, and 876 additional channels. The one-time software download charge will cost you $29.99 with a free player included.
The Premium Package for $9.99 includes 156 more channels, DTV OnDemand is another $9.99, and upgrading Premium Support is also $9.99. All of them are yearly, so you are looking at quite a bit of change. Still, if you have a decent PC and monitor, it is cheaper than most cable with no monthly fees.

YouTube to Stream Olympics

In an agreement with the International Olympic Committee, YouTube will be streaming 3 hours of recorded Olympic coverage per day. Countries like the U.S. and UK will be blocked since they will be receiving it on BBC and NBC. About 77 territories will have access to highlight reels and wrap-ups, but they will not be showing live events. Director of television and marketing for the IOC Timo Lumme claims that “for the first time in Olympic history we will have complete global online coverage.”

If you are looking for a mate you can always check singles groups online or you can opt for speed dating in real life to quickly eliminate losers in 30 seconds. Now you can combine the two with sites such as SpeedDate and WooMe.
Stephen Stokols, chief exec. of WooMe claims, “If you meet someone you like, three minutes isn’t long enough. If you don’t like them, 30 seconds is too long.”
He is probably right. Both sites employ the method of ending a voice and video chat between 90 seconds to 3 minutes. Matching is based on profiles, and future lovebirds can decide by e-mail if they want to meet. The method must be working. SpeedDate claims to have over 100,000 virtual dates per day while WooMe says they have up to 4,000 users at a time.

Cuil Search Engine, Better Than Google?

Former Google employee Anna Patterson’s search engine is alive. Cuil (pronounced “cool”) was released this week and supposedly can search 120 billion Web pages. She says that it is at least 3 times the size of Google, although that company says that they scan 1 trillion. Whoever is right, we like the idea of a search engine that uses actual content rather than ranking quantity and quality of links, as well as one that will not retain our histories or patterns. We gave it a test drive and think that Cuil is indeed very kewl.

The company 3 has announced a new mobile Skypephone. The S2, made by China’s Amoi, has a 22.2-inch 240×320 display, a 3.2 mega pixel camera, and handles GPRS/UMTS/HSDPA. Holding 50 MB of internal memory, it features a microSD card slot and built-in Windows modem drivers that are automatically installed after connecting to a USB port. Look for the S2 in the next couple of months or contact 3 for more info.

Beware of Hallmark Cards Bearing Viruses

Keep your eye out for phony Hallmark greeting cards sent to e-mails as they seem to be on the rise again. If the notice says you have to load a .zip file, you know you have a problem. The Trojan .zip releases a postcard.exe and a run key to Windows. When you restart your PC that key releases evilness upon you and the program adds you to an IRC botnet, accesses your contact list, and sends out even more attack e-mails. While we realize this is nothing new, we thought we would warn you on the chance that you believed someone actually remembered your birthday.
