Microsoft and Washington Sue Scareware Businesses

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Internet, Microsoft,
Microsoft and Washington’s Attorney General Rob McKenna have filed suit against two Texas businesses that scare people into buying a Registry Cleaner XP service for $39.95. The action has been filed under the Computer Spyware Act. The Branch Software and Alpha Red messages resemble system warnings. McKenna is hoping that the lawsuit will make the “spyware purveyors” to cease the practice and pay customer restitution.
McKenna says the action “has yanked the fear factor dial out of the hands of businesses that use scareware as a marketing tool and have spun it toward them.”

Man Uses Remote Access to Catch Thief

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, PC / Laptop, Software,
White Plains, NY resident Jose Caceres’ laptop was stolen last month when he left it on top of his car while carrying other things into his house. He then used a remote access program to watch it being used and told the police of its location, leading to the arrest of the suspect. Caceres says it took some time because the man utilized it frequently for porn. He eventually managed to catch a name and address when he registered on a site. Back in May, a woman from White Plains activated her stolen computer’s webcam with remote access to take pictures of the man who was using it.

Facebook version 2 for iPhone hits App Store

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Internet, Software,
If you’re into Facebook, and you own an iPhone, you’ll be pleased to know that Facebook version 2 for iPhone is now available on the App Store. The original Facebook app had been referred to as “Facebook Lite” by many a user, specifically because there were very few interactions with the service that you could do on the phone, when compared to the full web experience. Not one to sit on their laurels, the Facebook team got to work on this new version, and has packed in a plethora of new features:
- Address book lookup
- Facebook Chat
- People Search
- Message Search
- Message Attachments
- Notifications
- Photo Tags
- Faster photo uploads
- Friend Requests
Those are the ones that caught our eye, but there are even a few more than what we listed, including a new UI, and a bunch of bug fixes. Definitely some good stuff, other App Store developers might wanna take notice of a full-blown app done right by studying this release, seriously. Go hit the App Store to grab Facebook version 2, it’s free. Oh, and feel free to hit me up on Facebook.

IMDb Offers Free Internet Movies, TV

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Home Entertainment, Internet, Movies,
Amazon has announced that its subsidiary, IMDb, will be offering free recent and classic films such as “Planet of the Apes” and “The Madness of King George.” There are also trailers and short films. They say that over 6,000 titles are available and include episodes of new season shows like “30 Rock.” We checked out an episode on the site and noticed that it is about as free as regular TV, so expect some commercials, although not to the extent that you find on network television.
Verizon FiOS vs. Comcast: Feature-by-feature

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Broadband, Features, HDTV, Home Entertainment, Internet,

Ten days ago, Verizon FiOS TV officially launched here in Washington state. I was actually invited to speak at the launch event that took place that day, alongside Verizon representatives, and local government officials. I was specifically chosen as a case study of just how good FiOS is, since I literally moved specifically because Comcast was way too slow for the things we expected out of our Internet connection here at Gear Live HQ. It was an event meant to talk up the advantages of FiOS over cable (specifically, Comcast, in this area). Obviously, with FiOS looming over their territory, Comcast went into damage control mode to combat Verizon’s claims that they were the best option for Internet and television services. We were sent both the FiOS press release and the Comcast press release, and we figured we would respond to the claims of each, point-by-point.
For some background, we’ve been Comcast customers for over six years, for both Internet and television services. When we moved for FiOS 15 months ago, Comcast was still our cable television provider. As of today, I am a FiOS customer for both Internet and television, and as of 10 days ago, am no longer a Comcast customer. Now, on with the comparisons.

Tally Hall - YouTube Smash

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Editorial, Internet, Music, Videos,
What do we love about the Internet? That the incredibly gifted group Tally Hall can become such a hit on YouTube with their Internet Show that they made it all the way to the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. You go, guys!
What do we not love about the Internet? That commercial companies such as Procter & Gamble come up with a lame website and competition to get normally intelligent people to devise the next greatest catch phrase for Crest Whitening Expressions after Emeril Lagasse’s “Bam!”
