Military Launches Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in Afghanistan

US troops in Afghanistan can now keep in better contact with their loved ones. The military is launching a Facebook page, Twitter feeds and a YouTube site. Their plan is that it will counter the Taliban, who often publish propaganda on the Internet. They are hoping that soldiers will post stories and photos to better represent their daily lives. So far only in limited testing, the formal launch is this week.

Microsoft has launched Bing, a search engine tested under the code name Kumo, that replaces Live Search. Bing will supposedly make purchasing online easier, will be handier for finding medical information, and should facilitate travel arrangements. Besides searching, the engine retrieves and processes data, monitors history and displays it, and should be easier to read. Frankly, we were never all that fond of Microsoft Live Search so anything would be an improvement.

Yesterday, Google Wave was introduce at the Day 2 keynote of Google I/O. It’s pretty hard to give Google Wave a decent explanation, because it does so many things in new, amazing ways. Think of it as a hyper-communication tool that allows you to communicate with people, services, sites, etc. in brand new ways. The build of Google Wave demoed in the video is still very early, and just shows a fraction of what the final product will be able to do. You really do have to see it to believe it though. Oh, and I think that this is also evidence that HTML5 will officially, undoubtedly, rock.

Created by Stephen Wolfram over the past 20 years, you enter a calculation or question and with the help of built-in algorithms and data, you will get an answer. So far the “computational knowledge engine” has over 10 trillion pieces of data, 50,000 plus types of algorithms and models and linguistic capabilities for over a thousand domains.

Kindle Encourages Bloggers to Join Subscription Service

Amazon has unveiled its new beta program that will pay bloggers for turning them into Kindle subscriptions. Although it already offers many of them, the company wants to move the content to the home screen. Subscriptions will run from $.99 to $2.00 per month. Bloggers don’t pay any fees, but Amazon sets the price as well as keeping 70% of the price. Still, if you want new readers and pocket change, this might be an option for your blog.

AT&T To Upgrade to HSPA 7.2 Soon

AT&T has announced that they are upgrading their HSPA 7.2Mbps speed to their wireless network later this year, making it compatible with new smartphones and laptop express cards that will also be released around the same time. The company says that the upgrade will allow the faster access before the LTE networks merge in 2011 or 2012. They will be adopting LTE as part of the Generation Partnership Project, a collaboration of equipment makers and carriers along with Verizon Wireless and many global GSM carriers.

Skyfire 1.0 is now available for on Windows Mobile (smartphones/PPC) and Nokia N and E Series (Symbian S60, 3rd Edition) phones. The free mobile browser comes packed with Flash 10, Javascript, Ajax and Silverlight 2. Features include scrolling, zooming, and Twitter and Facebook integration. Available in the US, Canada and the UK, a public beta and Blackberry version should be released sometime this year. Farkie is a simple way to download videos, playlists, Website images, flash games, links and applications. They claim millions of pages that include YouTube and MySpace. Copy and paste an address, click “download,” select a format and a few minutes later, you have your results. The free site also has an online step-by-step tutorial and, as it is still in beta, is looking for feedback on how you use the service.

A couple in New Zealand woke up one morning only to discover that their 3 year-old had accidentally bought a $NZ20,000 Industrial Excavator from the site Trade Me. Mother Sarah Quinlan said that she had received an email from them saying that they hope she loved the mechanical digger. Claiming her daughter doesn’t even like tractors, she managed to convince the seller to take it back. Daughter Pipi has been banned from the computer when alone and her parents removed their auto-login. We think that is one precocious little girl and can’t wait to see what she can do once she is old enough to have her own.
