Talk about depressing. Ian Usher was obviously devastated when his wife left him since he decided to auction off his life on eBay. The Australian resident was hoping to raise $475,000.00 to make a fresh start. The package included most of his worldly possessions and a chance to take over his job. The first day it appeared that the bids went as high as $2.1 million. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a glitch in the system, so when all was said and done the highest bid was only $233,000. While that is only about half of what he would have liked, that seems enough to make a pretty decent start.

Europe’s fave site for wannabe singers, RedKaraoke, has been launched in an English version. They claim they are the largest site of their kind with over 14,000 songs and over 400,000 users. You can record both audio and video, compete with rankings, and a Tone Control Tool will make you sound even better. The site utilizes MIDI and KAR files, which can convert almost any song into a karaoke track. Created last year by brothers Miguel Angel and Richard Diez Ferreira, the site is free since it generates its funding through advertising and sponsorships.

Those Who Dig Gadgets Make Better Leaders

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech,
A recent online study took 25,000 American adults and found that the ones who purchased a lot of techie products tended to score higher in the traits of leadership, dynamism, and assertiveness. The research, done by a collaboration between Mindset Media and Nielsen Online, found that it is not just based on age and gender. We know that you have been telling people this for years and, by the way, the study also concluded that another trait found in the same group of people was a lack of modesty.

You may already know that Sims creator Will Right has been hard at work making Spore, a game that involves evolution of unicellular creatures to intelligent life. Electronic Arts has released the Creature Creator, free editing software that you can use to devise your own Spore and customize buildings, vehicles, etc. Over 250,000 of them have already been built and displayed on the Sporepedia Website. If that isn’t enough to keep you busy, there is now a video/dance competition. The $49.95 game will be available for PCs, Macs, mobile phones and Nintendo DS this September.

Apple let’s MobileMe browser requirements page slip

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Internet, Rumors, Software,

If you had any question of what browsers would play nice with Apple’s upcoming MobileMe service, a slip-up by the company earlier today pretty much answers the question. Until pointed out by my pal Cory over at TUAW, the above image was viewable when trying to access .Mac from an iPhone. Apple quickly corrected the mistake, and you can check out the updated screenshot after the jump, but basically, it’s just a .Mac help page.
On the MobileMe end of things, it’s no surprise that Apple recommends Safari, followed by Safari, and lastly Internet Explorer 7. It will be interesting to see how many downloads of Safari for Windows MobileMe can help push through.

Free Hell’s Kitchen Video Game

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Home Entertainment, Hot Deals, Internet, Video Games,

There have been video games based on films and tv shows for as long as we can remember, and we notice that every time a new super hero movie arrives, there is always a game tie-in. Now video games meet Reality TV with Hell’s Kitchen. The lovable curmudgeon Chef Gordon Ramsay is in 3D and helps you work your way up to a Five Star restaurant and includes recipes you can try at home. Compatible with Windows XP/Vista, the game is free to download. Of course, if you want the unrated version that will set you back $19.95. Next thing you know “Big Brother” and “Survivor” will become games, too.

Take that, Vista! Just in case you had forgotten, Tuesday massive download day for the new Firefox 3. We were amazed that over 8 million downloads were made in 24 hours. While Mozilla is still waiting for the official word, we have no doubt that they hit that Guinness world record. If you were part of that, good for you for taking the challenge, and don’t forget to download your certificate that you can proudly display over your cubicle.

For all you Verizon FiOS subscribers out there, Verizon just announced this morning that they are going to be upping a couple of their speed tiers across the country, beginning next week. Of course, you need to live in one of the FiOS-covered areas in one of the 16 states where the service is available, like we do.
So, first things first - if you are in New York or Virginia, don’t expect any changes. You guys are already enjoying the upgraded speeds that the rest of us have been waiting for. For the rest of us though, two changes are in order. First, the 30/15 speed tier will be going away, and will be replaced by the newer 50/20 tier. Crazy, we know. The 50/20 speed will remain at the same $139 per month cost. Those of you on the 15/15 symmetrical tier will also say goodbye to your current speeds, as you will be upgraded to the new 20/20 speed tier, and it will remain at the same $64 per month cost.
The lower tiers are getting upgrades as well, as 15/2 becomes 20/5, and 5/2 becomes 10/2. It should be noted that Comcast recently bumped up their speeds across the board to 16/2. I guess Verizon was just waiting on Comcast before spreading their NY and VA speeds to the rest of the country.

Maury’s Baby Maker Website

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Home Entertainment, Internet,
We aren’t really into the Maury Povich Show, but we decided to try out his baby maker anyway. You simply take two images and circle the major features and voila! you make a baby. Because some of us don’t do pictures, we tried our South Park pic and an Elvis M&M. The results are fairly gruesome, don’t you think? Even by cartoon standards, this is one ugly baby, and a more difficult program than most we have shown you. Try one for yourself, but don’t expect spectacular results.

Chances are you won’t be discovered at a drug store counter or the corner pub that showcases local bands, but now you have a better chance at this new website, the City of Fame. Upload your music videos or screen tests and perhaps you will be noticed, not that we think a lot of agents will be hanging on the site. Still, it is a step up from YouTube and MySpace. Registration is free and we wonder, if you make it, will the site ask for a percentage?
(Thanks, Frani)
