Droid Incredible picking up mobile hotspot and 720p recording via OTA update?

Looks like the HTC Droid Incredible is set to pick up a couple of oft-requested features by way of an over-the-air (OTA) software update. Droid Life is reporting that we can expect to see mobile hotspot functionality, 720p video recording, and even the addition of the red Droid eye bootup sequence (not that that one is a big deal.) No firm word on when the update will start being pushed to users, but we have an inquiry out to Verizon on that. iPhone 4 has orientation issues, not that there’s anything wrong with that

Looks like we found another iPhone 4 oddity. It looks like taking and sharing pictures with the iPhone 4 may have a couple of bumps in the road. The iPhone 4 uses scantily-supported JPEG orientation flags for photos rather than actually rotating the pixel data, causing many online services (Dailybooth and Facebook included) to interpret portrait-oriented photos as landscape and then turning them on their side. As you can see above, I took a self-portrait and sent it in to Dailybooth, and it appeared as a landscape image.

FaceTime: Video chat come to iPhone 4

Apple just announced that the iPhone 4 will include a new video chatting feature called FaceTime. FaceTime allows you to chat with other iPhone 4 owners on video, using the front-facing camera on the device. In order to initiate, you must first make a phone call to the person you want to chat with. Once you are connected, you can then go into a video call. Both parties must be connected to Wi-Fi in order for it to work. Very cool.
Eye-Fi Connect X2 review

We’ve talked about our love of the Eye-Fi line of flash memory cards in the past, and their latest X2 line has just recently hit stores with a bunch of new features. We were able to spend a bit of time with their entry-level device, the Connect X2, to get a look at what their most basic X2 branded model can do. As it turns out, it’s a great card that can do a heck of a lot. Read on to find out how a memory card with built-in WI-Fi can change the way take and share your digital photos.
First, let’s cover the basics. The Eye-Fi Connect X2 is a 4GB SDHC Class 6 flash memory card with Wi-Fi built-in. If you are unfamiliar with Eye-Fi, the whole magic here is in the Wi-Fi, as it opens up possibilities that you just don’t get with other SD cards. The Connect X2 can automatically upload your images and videos to your computer, either to a folder or directly into your image storage program like iPhoto and Picasa. In addition, it can also upload that content to one of more than 25 sites online—places like Flickr, Facebook, YouTube, Picasa, MySpace, and the like.

Wolfgang S Birdhouse puts your neighbors on high alert

With the Wolfgang S Birdhouse designer Dennis Nino Clasen has killed two, ahem, birds with one stone. Not only does it allow you to trick your neighbors in to thinking you are watching their every move but it also puts an aesthetically-entertaining roof over the heads of your feathered friends. While it may not keep your neighbor from tossing their raked-up leaves over the fence and into your yard for very long, it will provide a little extra ambiance for the exterior of your house during the spring and summer months.
Eye-Fi announces Geo X2 Apple-exclusive, expanded Wi-Fi support

The folks over at Eye-Fi have yet another 802.11n card they’d like you to know about, and this one is an Apple Store exclusive. The Geo X2 sits nicely between the $49.99 Connect X2 and the $99.99 Explore X2, and will cost $69.99. For all intents and purposes, the Geo X2 appears to be similar to the Explore X2, but it packs in 4GB of memory instead of 8GB. It rocks the same Endless Memory Mode that automatically deletes photos after they safely been wirelessly synched and backed up, the Class-6 flash memory, and the automatic geotagging support as well.
Alongside this announcement, Eye-Fi also made it known that, starting at the end of May, users can expect greatly improved Wi-Fi support, thanks to their partnership with Devicescape. The meat and potatoes of this announcement is that the Eye-Fi cards will now be able to log on to public Wi-Fi hotspots that require getting through a browser splash screen. Since that is pretty much the majority, this opens things up quite a bit.

The newly released Eye-Fi X2 series of Wi-Fi-enabled SD cards is now shipping, and they offer some very nice improvements over the previous Eye-Fi models. If you are unfamiliar, Eye-Fi cards connect to your home network or a hotspot, and upload the images from your camera to your home computer so that you don’t have to physically sync your camera regularly. We have all the specs below, but we have to say, we are loving the “Endless Memory” feature the most. Basically, as you snap pics and they sync to your computer (Eye-Fi can also send them directly to social networks like Flickr and Facebook,) Eye-Fi will delete them from the card, so you never ever have to manually delete pictures.
Here’s what you can expect from the three new cards:
- Eye-Fi Connect X2 – At 4GB capacity, the Eye-Fi Connect X2 will automatically upload JPEG photos and videos to the computer and one of more than 25 online sharing sites, such as Flickr, Facebook, YouTube or Picasa, through a Wi-Fi network. MSRP: $49.99.
- Eye-Fi Explore X2 – At 8GB of capacity, the Eye-Fi Explore X2 will automatically upload JPEG photos and videos to the computer and one of more than 25 online sharing sites. It offers lifetime automatic geotagging so photos and videos arrive at the user’s computer with location information already included to identify where the image was captured. Explore X2 also offers one year of hotspot access for uploading away from home at more 21,000 AT&T and Harborlink locations across the Unites States and through open hotspots. MSRP: $99.99.
- Eye-Fi Pro X2 – Unveiled at CES and winner of CNET’s “Best of CES” award, the 8GB Eye-Fi Pro X2 will automatically upload JPEG and RAW photos and videos to the home computer, and will send them to one of more than 25 online sharing sites. It also allows users to create an ad hoc connection directly to their computer to wirelessly upload photos and videos while away from a wireless router. Like Explore X2, Pro X2 offers lifetime geotagging and one-year of hotspot access to enable uploads away from home at more than 21,000 AT&T and Harborlink hotspots and open hotspots. MSRP: $149.99.
In addition to all that, Eye-Fi cards now have double the hotspot access that they had previously, starting on March 31, with the inclusion of any AT&T or Harborlink hotspot location (like Starbucks, Hertz Rental, Marriot hotels, and more) allowing users to simply turn their cameras on, and have the Eye-Fi go to work and do its thing.

iPad bezel has spot for a camera

Looks like those of you who were sure that the iPad would have a camera were almost right. If the iPad internal bezel component is anything to go buy, it looks like Apple decided late in the game to not include a camera in their soon-to-be-released tablet - that, or they were keeping their options open. In the image above, you see the iPad bezel at the top, and a bezel for a unibody MacBook at the bottom. In the middle is the camera that slips into the MacBook frame, and as you can see, it fits perfectly into the iPad frame as well. I guess this means we can hold out hope for a camera in iPad version 2?
