As we all know, the Xbox 360 cannot stream Xvid and Divx movies as is. Finally, thanks to a clever piece of software, it can. Basically, you can stream the movies by converting them to WMV format on the fly, but since the conversion time is so fast, you don’t really notice that it’s happening. Follow the lengthy (but useful) instructions from Casey over at Brains-N-Brawn.com.

Wireless Guitar Hero Controller

Shelled out the $80 for the Guitar Hero game and controller? Then we’re sure you’re having a blast with the game, as it’s one of the most original video games to come along in a while. But one problem we’ve had to deal with is the relatively short length of the guitar controller’s wire. It now looks like we may be able to take care of that problem.
TheDude06 over on the Make forums has posted a thread describing how to mod a Guitar Hero controller to make it wireless. The mod looks awesome - in fact, many of the Make magazine’s mods are incredibly slick - however, we’re a little worried that the mod may be a little difficult to undertake. If anyone has the courage to undertake this project, feel free to let us know how it turns out!

We knew it wouldn’t take long after Xbox 360 games had been cracked, but an actual Xbox 360 console has been hacked - as shown in the linked video. Just watching the 360 in the video load up an illegal copy of PDZ makes me feel uncomfortable. It really didn’t take long for the machine to be hacked - and it’s disappointing especially considering how hard Microsoft claimed it worked to prevent this sort of thing from happening.

Xbox Modders Could Face Jail Time

Three men were charged on Monday of copyright infringement for selling modified Xbox consoles. The machines sold aren’t licensed by Microsoft and have large hard drives. The units are able to copy and illegally play those copies of Xbox games. Due to the modifications, these modified Xbox units were being sold at a large premium over the standard Xbox MSRP. Two of the men are in their thirties, while the other is in his forties. You would think grown men would know better, but then again when there’s a profit to be made, someone is bound make it.

The Xbox 360 is only 7 days old and it’s already been blinged out. When J Allard said to take the Xbox 360 out of their hands and make it your own, Llamma’s Adventures did a little more than just slap on a new faceplate. Their work on the Xbox 360 is just plain awesome. Their mod sports a window, cathode lights, an added fan for air flow, custom paint, a blue Ring of Light, and a 60 GB laptop drive in addition to the 20 GB already on the console. You can be sure we’ll be attempting that cool controller LED mod.

Possible Solution To Xbox 360 Freezing Problem

Most people have heard or read about the freezing issue some people have experienced with their new toy, freezing after a minimal uptime. Everything has pointed to a faulty power supply, and while Microsoft has not issued a statement as of yet, Goldeneyemaster from Gamespot forums took things into his own hands to come up with a solution to the problem: suspend the power “brick” in the air to allow it to dissipate heat through all of its sides. Now you can go about this various ways, you could actually suspend it in the air by means of strings or just get a box with an open top and place it on top. Whatever way you go about it be sure to tell us if this worked for you and what you did. Lets see how creative we can all get with this.

John Tokash has found something very peculiar about his newly acquired (and disassembled) Game Boy Micro - a jack accessible to the faceplate that is marked “V-5” on the circuit board. Could Nintendo be planning on releasing some sort of faceplates that draw power from the Micro’s battery? Not likely, as it doesn’t seem that the port is powered - so why is it there?

Joystiq has an interesting post on the Xbox 360 and an interesting potential hack. With a 20gb HDD and triple core G5 based processor it is theoretically possible for the modder community to port the current PowerPC based version of OS X to the Xbox 360. Obviously doing anything like this to the yet-unreleased platform is still theoretical and would certainly void your warranty but with Apples open source initiatives and the legions of Xbox hardware hackers out there I almost think of this as inevitable. Obviously with the hit that console makers take on the hardware the Xbox 360 would pack a processing punch far greater than the Mac Mini at a fraction of the price - who wouldn’t want to get one for a great little Mac Media Center.

Rockstar Release Hot Coffee Patch

Rockstar has released an un-patch patch which will disable and remove the possibility of using the infamous “Hot Coffee” patch in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PC). This comes shortly after the ESRB changed the rating of the game from “M” to “AO”. You can download this patch from the News Section of Rockstar’s Home Page. Read more to go there.
