Whitney Houston unveils I Look to You video

Whitney Houston’s GMA performance may have had its flaws (it’s all your fault, Oprah!), but she’s looking flawless here.
In this new video for “I Look to You,” the diva comes very close - very close - to making us all forget her years on Being Bobby Brown. (Though I’m secretly hoping she won’t.)
This clip arrives just after Houston’s CD of the same name hit #1 on the album charts. The last time the artist achieved that (outside of The Bodyguard soundtrack) was in 1987 with Whitney.

Jason Mraz Sets New Billboard Record

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Artist News, The Charts, Pop,
Having trouble getting Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” out of your head? It seems you are not the only one.
Despite debuting over a year ago (May 3, 2008) and only peaking at #6 on the Hot 100, the song still has a lot of life. Now, after 70 weeks on that Billboard chart, the Grammy-nominated tune has broken the record previously set by LeAnn Rimes. (“How Do I Live” ended it’s 69-week run in 1998.)
“I’m Yours” is also the first tune to top each of these four radio-based charts: Mainstream Top 40/Pop Songs, Adult Contemporary, Adult Top 40, and Triple A.

Michael Jackson Taking Over iTunes Chart

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Artist News, The Charts, Pop, iTunes,

It should come as no surprise that less than 24 hours after Michael Jackson’s death, his library is dominating the iTunes sales chart. You can check out the entire Michael Jackson music library if you want to get in on the action.
What is surprising? Although he currently has 39 entries in the Top 100, his highest chart position is #2. What’s at #1? ‘I Gotta Feeling’ from the Black Eyed Peas. (Perez Hilton’s rivals are also still sitting at #3 with ‘Boom Boom Pow.’)
So which songs are fans are downloading the most? The King of Pop’s ‘Man in the Mirror’ currently sits at #2 while ‘Thriller’ stands at #4 and ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’ at #5. ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’ and ‘Smooth Criminal’ are the only other tunes ranked in The Top 10.
Update: Looks like 8 of the Top 10 iTunes albums are also Michael Jackson’s work.

Eminem Kills Competition with Relapse Debut

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: The Charts, Country, Hip-Hop & Rap, Rock,

With the debut of Relapse, Eminem has fallen back into old habits.
For the fifth time in his career, Slim Shady has seen his album debut at the top of the charts. Over the past week, the rapper sold 608,000 copies of his new CD. That figure marks the best one-week figure for the entire year. It’s also the largest total since AC/DC‘s release in October 2008. (That was when Black Ice recorded 784,000 purchased units.)
Last week’s chart topper, Green Day, fell to the #2 spot this week with 166,000 units sold. Kenny Chesney (89,000), Method Man and Redman (63,000) and comedian Dane Cook (61,000) rounded out the top five spots on Billboard’s 200.

Eminem Breaks Digital Sales Records

Kelly Clarkson may have just had the biggest leap on Billboard’s Hot 100, but Eminem is breaking records of his own.
“Crack the Bottle,” Marshall Mather’s collaboration with 50 Cent and Dr. Dre, just scored the most digital downloads during a song’s debut week. The single was purchased 418,000 times, approximately 180,000 times more than Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You.”
Only Flo Rida’s “Low” (467,000) and Lady GaGa’s “Just Dance” (419,000) have done better than “Bottle.”
“Lose Yourself” was Eminem‘s only other song to reach the top of the Hot 100. That song spent 12 weeks at #1 after its 2002 release.
