Gwen Stefani can't listen to No Doubt's Return of Saturn album. The singer says it was a painful time working on the 2000 LP as her personal life was in a mess so she can't ever being herself to play it again.
Talking about why the band put a birth-control dispenser on the cover, Gwen said, "That was 'cause I was thinking, 'Am I gonna have a baby? Am I gonna be married?' It was a really nasty time period for me. I can't listen to that record. Ever. I found the journals to that record and I can't read them. It's so dark!"
Gwen - who now has two sons, Kingston, six, and Zuma, four, with husband Gavin Rossdale, whom she married in 2002 - admits a lot of the songs on the album are very "self-indulgent," though she is proud of some of her writing on the record: "That record is so self-indulgent. There's some really good songwriting on that record, though. I think 'Magic's in the Make-up' is one of the best songs I've ever written."

Fiona Apple Cancels Tour to Tend to Her Dying Dog
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Artist News, Concerts / Tours, Alternative,
Despite releasing her first album this year since 2005's Extraordinary Machine, 2012 has not been very good to Fiona Apple: first she was arrested in September for drug possession, and now her faithful dog of 14 years is dying.
In a Facebook message to her fans, Apple revealed in a scanned handwritten letter why she is postponing her current tour. “I just can’t leave her now, please understand... If I go away again, I’m afraid she’ll die and I won’t have the honor of singing her to sleep, of escorting her out," she wrote.

Justin Bieber won three prizes at last night's American Music Awards.
The 18-year-old singer - who was accompanied to the bash by his mother Pattie Mallette - was the big winner at the ceremony, taking home pop/rock male artist, pop/rock album for Believe and the evening's final accolade, the coveted artist of the year award.
Accepting pop/rock male artist, he said, "I want to say this is for all the haters who thought I was just here for one or two years. I feel like I'm going to be here for a very long time."
For his third win, Justin brought his mother on stage with him and told her, "I wanted to thank you for always believing in me... This is my mom. She's little, but she's beautiful."
The Believe star also performed twice at the ceremony, duetting with Nicki Minaj on their track "Beauty and a Beat" and a stripped-back solo acoustic performance of "As Long As You Love Me."

Bjork Picky About Who Covers Her Songs

Bjork will only let certain people cover her songs.
The "Mutual Core" singer chooses artists she thinks will do a fresh take on her tracks to record their own versions.
"I'm in a protected situation. I've already done my version the way I want it to be. I ask people I already like, it's not like I'm asking just anybody. I sometimes compare it to jazz standards. You hear two different versions of 'My Funny Valentine' by Billie Holiday and Miles Davis and neither of them are correct. I like the remix platform. There are invisible rules but a lot of freedom."

Seen above, the video is a non-narrative ode to Hollywood - both its beautiful and dark sides - which features Lindsay Lohan, fashion photographer Terry Richardson, and Franco himself in drag.
In addition to "Blue," lead singer Michael Stipe has asked a selection of filmmakers to each produce a music video for a track off of the upcoming album.

Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber were the big winners at the MTV Europe Music Awards earlier tonight.
The 22-year-old "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" singer and the 18-year-old Canadian popstar scooped three awards each at the star-studded event hosted by supermodel Heidi Klum in Frankfurt, Germany.
Performer Taylor - who made her first appearance at the annual awards ceremony and recently released her new album Red - picked up awards for Best Female, Best Live and the debut Best Look award. "I am so excited about tonight. It doesn't even feel real, to get to my first EMAs and to win three awards is unbelievable, I am blown away. I had a blast during the performance that was the most production I've ever got to do during a performance with all the circus acrobats it was so much fun," she said.
"As Long As You Love Me" singer Justin - who was unable to attend the event as he has a concert in Brooklyn tomorrow and is due to meet Selena Gomez for crisis talks following their split last week - picked up Best Male, Best Pop and Best World Stage.

30 Seconds to Mars Says Their Next Album Will Be ‘More Evolved’
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Artist News, Upcoming Releases, Alternative, Rock,
30 Seconds to Mars thinks that their next album will be "more evolved."
The band - made up of Jared Leto, Shannon Leto and Tomo Milicevic - are set to release their fourth LP in 2013, and Jared believes it will be a progression fro their previous offering This Is War.
"It will be stronger, better, more evolved. It's a complete transformation for us. I really think that this could be the best thing we've ever done," Jared said.
Jared - who recently announced his return to acting, where he will play a HIV-positive cross-dresser - has been recording the new album all over the world with his bandmates, but admitted none of the group were sure they wanted to continue when they were initially asked about their future projects: "People started to ask us about a new album. We had been on the road for almost two and a half years and I didn't know... I had no idea what the future held. I don't think any of us knew."

Billy Corgan’s Suicidal Thoughts
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Artist News, Gossip, Alternative, Rock,
Smashing Pumpkins singer Billy Corgan "almost killed" himself "three or four" times.
The musician has been overcome with dark thoughts on a number of occasions and even started planning his death, but his faith in God always pulled him through:
"I almost killed myself about three, four, seven times. I literally started planning my death and what I would leave behind, and what I was gonna write. Three or four times in my life. What I finally realized, at least on the back end of this, is that God, at least as I understand God, was there all along. Once I was able to process my reality in that way, I no longer felt like a victim."
Billy, 45, has previously told how one of his worst suicidal phases came when he was recording the band's breakthrough album, Siamese Dream, in 1993, on which he famously played almost all of the instruments:

Marina and the Diamonds Not Worried About Being Pop
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Gossip, Alternative, Pop, New Releases,
Marina and the Diamonds felt some fans "wouldn't allow" her to be a pop artist on Electra Heart.
The singer's second album took a more chart-friendly direction away from her indie roots, and while she was initially unsure, she is now happy some people would criticize her for it.
"I think that I wasn't allowed to change and that deep down I wanted to write a pop album and to be a popstar. For some reason, I felt like people wouldn't allow me to do that, which is stupid because I love the album. So I should have just never said anything and accepted that some people would have said 'she's not credible anymore' and that some people would start to be a fan of me, because that's what always happens when you change your music."
Marina - real name Marina Diamandis - worked with pop producer Dr. Luke on the album, and says he changed the entire way some of the songs were presented:

Amanda Palmer Spends $1.2 Million Made from New Album
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Artist News, Gossip, Alternative, Rock, New Releases,
Amanda Palmer has spent all of the $1.2 million she raised to make her new album. The "Coin Operated Boy" singer got the astronomical amount by going directly to fans to fund her solo album, Theatre Is Evil, and although all the money has gone, it's all been spent wisely on her career.
"It's all gone. People look at it and they see a giant pile of money, but we're running a business. It doesn't make you rich, it just means that your volume of business has increased. The production of the CD, vinyl and art book, including shipping costs, was $300,000 alone. All the money [went] directly back on the product, the stage show, and the videos. I'd much rather live that way than make a compromised product."
