Shirley Bassey Collaborates with Modern Songwriters

Shirley BasseyDame Shirley Bassey has recorded a song by on her comeback album.

The legendary Welsh vocalist, whose career has spanned 50 years, performs a collection of tracks written by modern songwriters for The Performance, including efforts by Take That frontman Gary Barlow and Pet Shop Boys singer Neil Tennant as well as the British rock band - fronted by Ricky Wilson.

Producer David Arnold is confident the LP will introduce Shirley to a whole new generation and put her back at the top of the charts. Arnold - who has scored the last five films - said: “All these songs were just songs until Shirley Bassey sang them. A Bassey performance can knock the wind out of your sails, make you laugh, or cry, let you in on the joke or lead you to a more exotic place.”

Other artists who have contributed songs to the LP - the first studio record made by 72-year-old Bassey for 20 years - include Rufus Wainwright, the Manic Street Preachers and KT Tunstall.

Arnold believes Bassey’s latest tracks could easily become as popular as her best known hits, such as James Bond theme “Goldfinger” or “Big Spender.” “I tried to make a record that made the most of that voice and one that could sit alongside her other classics,” David said.

The Performance is scheduled for release in November.
