Box Office Breakdown: Inception Holds (Off) the Salt

So remind me again - why exactly did Tom Cruise drop out of Salt?
The thriller Cruise was once attached to fired up $36 million over the past three days - nearly $15 million more than Knight and Day did just four weeks ago. (That movie, by the way, just fell out of the Top 10 after only four weeks.) Salt‘s numbers, though, did not match Angelina Jolie’s previous actioners (e.g. Wanted, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Tomb Raider). The Sony film also failed to boot Inception out of first place.
Meanwhile, Ramona and Beezus, the weekend’s only other new wide release, failed to even cross the $10 million mark. But Beverly Cleary lovers shouldn’t feel bad - the adaptation only cost about $15 million to produce.

Comic-Con News: Mark Ruffalo is The Hulk

Robert Downey, Jr., also known as Iron Man, gave news-hungry Comic-Con fans exactly what they wanted during his appearance at the convention: he announced the next Hulk.
Mark Ruffalo, primarily known for roles in the romantic comedy and dramatic film genres, will officially step into The Hulk’s sizable shoes to take on the role of self-effacing scientist Bruce Banner, the green hero’s alter ego. (Edward Norton, who played the green superhero in the 2008 film, was dropped from the upcoming Avengers movie project, leaving a huge casting hole in the Marvel movie franchise.)
Meanwhile, Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) has been confirmed for the role of Hawkeye.
The Avengers is scheduled for release in 2012. Comic book fans won’t have to wait that long to see more live-action heroes, however: Captain America and Thor are both getting their own movies, which will release in the summer of 2011.

First Look: Natalie Portman as the Black Swan

The Wrestler‘s Darren Aronofsky focuses his sights on a completely different stage for his upcoming film Black Swan.
In this thriller from Fox Searchlight, Natalie Portman stars as Nina, a prima ballerina in New York who has been chosen to star in a production of Swan Lake. The pressures of the role plus the arrival of a new dancer (Mila Kunis) lead to the film’s psychological twists and turns.
Swan - also starring Winona Ryder, Barbara Hershey and Vincent Cassel - has just been selected to open the Venice Film Festival. It will debut in the US later this year.

The film may not open until next year, but it’s never too early to start drinking rum.
In this clip that debuted at Comic-Con 2010, Captain Jack Sparrow (a.k.a. Johnny Depp) gives audiences a hint - or does he? - about what we should expect from during the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean installment.
“You may have also heard whisperings and rumors that Jack Sparrow will be recruiting a crew to undertake a voyage to the Fountain of Youth. Not true, course not. But even if it weren’t not true, you wouldn’t be interested in joining me - would you? Eh? No, thought not. I do admit that there’d be varied and substantial dangers along the way including, but not limited, to zombies, cutthroats, mermaids, and the vicious and vivacious Penelope Cruz - which is why I’m not going. Vanilla Sky: Most Confusing Film Ever

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz might want to think twice before reuniting for another film.
The stars of the box office disappointment Knight and Day are now being reminded of another title from their past.
According to a poll conducted by LoveFilm, 2001’s Vanilla Sky is considered the most confusing movie ever made. The surreal Cameron Crowe film - also starring Cruise’s ex-girlfriend Penelope Cruz - centered on a wealthy publishing heir (Cruise) who suffers from a series of strange hallucinations after a car accident.
David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive ranked second in the poll while Donnie Darko, directed by Richard Kelly, placed third.

Cinema Scene: Joss Whedon Helms Avengers, Del Toro’s Haunted Mansion

-Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s Joss Whedon officially announced at Comic-Con that he will be directing The Avengers. The superhero film is scheduled for a May 4, 2012 release.
-According to Will Arnett and show creator Mitch Hurwitz, the Arrested Development movie is still going to happen. I guess I’ll believe it when I see it?
-Lionsgate finally blinked. Saw 3D, originally scheduled to debut on Oct. 22, has been pushed to Oct. 29 - one week after Paranormal Activity 2 premieres.
-A Hobbit-less Guillermo del Toro is focusing on his next project. He is now planning to produce, write and possibly direct a scary version of Disney’s The Haunted Mansion.
-Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, has been chosen to open the 67th Venice Film Festival. The festival opens September 1.
Will Ferrell, Tina Fey Reveal Megamind Movie Ending

Reporters recently caught up to former SNL funnyman Will Ferrell, who was on the Comic-Con red carpet to promote upcoming animated flick Megamind. Co-star and former SNL cast mate Tina Fey, who plays Roxanne in the film, walked the carpet with Ferrell. Brad Pitt also stars in the flick.
“My character does defeat Brad Pitt. Finally! I have been chasing that guy for years,” Ferrell cracked wise with Entertainment Tonight, potentially revealing the movie’s end.
Ferrell plays the title character in the flick, Megamind, the world’s smartest super villain. Pitt plays hero Metro Man, who must thwart all of Megamind’s plans.
The movie will be released on November 5.
