Ledger’s Last Flick: Will We See It?

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Independent, Casting, Upcoming Releases,

Though he died at a relatively young age, Heath Ledger left behind an impressive body of work for fans to enjoy. This Oscar-winning actor has been highly celebrated for his award-winning role in The Dark Knight, a film widely believed to be his last. It is not.
At the time of his death, Ledger was in the midst of filming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. The indie flick details the life of a traveling magician. In order to complete the film, actors Jude Law, Colin Farrell and Johnny Depp finished scenes which would have featured Ledger.
The movie has now been completed for six months, but there are currently no deals in the works to bring the flick to the US market. Though major distributors stepped forward months ago, these deals reportedly fell apart and currently there’s nothing in the till. Does this mean we’ll never see Ledger’s last movie?
Don’t count on it. Sooner or later, someone will pick up the movie and bring it to US audiences.

Now that Slumdog Millionaire has been sanctified by the Golden Globes and the Oscars, it’s officially the best movie of last year. But really now, last year is already over. So which movie might be the best this year…or next?
Woody Allen’s doing all he can to secure talent for his upcoming flick - and he’s going for the best. Slumdog Millionaire’s Freida Pinto, who made a splash in her lacy blue gown at the Academy Awards, has signed on to the currently untitled Allen project. Pinto, in fact anything associated with 2008’s Best Picture, is the current toast of Hollywood and there is no doubt many more projects will soon come her way.
The actress will be joining Naomi Watts, Josh Brolin and Anthony Hopkins on the set. The film will be Pinto’s first since Slumdog Millionaire.

The Academy Awards ceremony is always the biggest night in Hollywood. The movie elite put on their fancy clothes, get decked out in diamonds and spend an entire evening patting each other on the back even as they continue to entertain us, the viewers. Thanks.
It’s supposed to be a glittery, glamorous event where the movies of a single year are celebrated - and sure, it is that. It is also an opportunity to see the stars in their finest hour and in their finery, a chance to decide which movies we ought to rent at the video store and a reason to scream at the TV (“I can’t believe that movie won again!”).
It’s hours and hours of award-giving, speech-making and montage-playing, and for the most part it’s pretty boring. But in between all that filler there are a few moments that are worth noticing. At this year’s Oscar ceremony, there was one moment which is sure to live on in Internet video clip history for a long, long time. I’m talking about the greatest moment of the night - acceptance speeches notwithstanding.

While Slumdog Millionaire was making news for India, Tyler Perry was busy breaking records for his studio.
The latest installment in Tyler Perry’s franchise surpassed all expectations this weekend. Madea Goes to Jail, with its $41 million premiere, was the box office’s biggest opener since November’s Twilight. It was also the best debuter for Lionsgate…ever. (October 2006’s Saw III was the previous topper at $33 million.)
Unfortunately, Friday the 20th didn’t go as well for Friday the 13th. After only one week on the charts, last weekend’s record breaker dropped a frightening 81% to 6th place.

After a year away from live Oscars coverage, I’m thrilled to be back for the 2009 Academy Awards.
Even though Dark Knight‘s snub will probably keep a number of viewers away (how many can honestly say they’ve seen The Reader?), I’m eagerly anticipating several moments from this evening’s broadcast.
Will Heath Ledger’s family bring the house to tears? Is Mickey Rourke going to make the producers wince? Will the cameras pan to Brangelina after Jennifer Aniston’s presentation? Are Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron really (really?) going to do a song and dance number?
To find out if this will be the year of the Slumdog or the underdog, stay tuned here for the live results!

While Mickey Rourke was busy offending viewers, Paris Hilton and Mike Myers were awarded for offending audiences.
At yesterday’s 29th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards presentation, the two nominees were both (dis)honored with three wins each. Myers’ The Love Guru earned a Razzie for Worst Picture along with awards for Worst Actor and Worst Screenplay.

Mickey Rourke Gives Profanity-Laden Speech at Spirit Awards

Warning: This is the
uncensoredversion.
At yesterday’s 2009 Film Independent Spirit Awards, Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) delivered a speech that could only be heard on a cable channel. Fortunately for everyone watching, the Best Male Lead winner did it on live television.
The comeback kid, probably realizing he’d be limited at the Oscars, let it all hang out. Here’s hoping he still has something in the reserves for the Academy tonight.
You can find the full list of Spirit Award winners here.

Javier Bardem Won’t Present Oscar to Penelope Cruz

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Awards, Celebrity Gossip,

Thanks to a scheduling conflict, one of Sunday’s most highly-anticipated moments will not happen as predicted.
Should Penelope Cruz win the award for Best Supporting Actress (that’s the way things seem to be trending right now), the statue will not handed to her by Javier Bardem. Although that job usually goes to the previous year’s Best Supporting Actor winner, Cruz’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona costar - and real-life boyfriend - won’t actually be in attendance.
According to E! Online, the No Country for Old Men actor will not be able to break away from a shoot in Barcelona. He is currently there filming Biutiful with director Alejandro González Iñárritu.
But it turns out Bardem’s presence would have been a moot point anyway. The producers are supposedly breaking with tradition and mixing up their lineup of presenters.
