Remake News: Masters of the Universe, Soul Train and More

Masters of the Universe: A collaboration between Mattel and Warner Bros. has just fallen through. The two hoped to bring a Masters of the Universe adaptation to the big screen, but the two parties could not agree on the direction. It’s believed the toy company will now bring the He-Man vs. Skeletor story to another studio. John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda) may still be on board to direct.

Soul Train: Hollywood’s current obsession with music and dance has now brought us to Soul Train. The 1980’s set film will be based on the program that ran on TV for 35 years. Former host Don Cornelius will co-produce along with Darryl Porter and Aaron Gellar. Malcolm Spellman is in charge of the Warner Bros. script.

Mother’s Day: The Hand that Rocks the Cradle‘s Rebecca De Mornay will move up from nanny to mommy in Mother’s Day, a remake of a 1980 horror film. In the update, Rebecca will play the matriarch of a sadistic family that terrorizes a home. An April release date is projected for the movie.

The Three Musketeers: Thanks to Slumdog Millionaire - and a 3D retelling by Paul W. S. Anderson - I may finally learn the names of The Three Musketeers. Although the classic tale has been told many times (Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland and Chris O’Donnell starred in a 1993 version), the Resident Evil director hopes to create a story “rich in eye-popping action, romance and adventure.” Anderson co-wrote the screenplay with Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones’s Diary). The film may be released in 2011.
