Laverne & Shirley: File this in the “Was He Kidding?” file. During a recent red carpet event for Valentine’s Day, director Garry Marshall said he may bring Laverne & Shirley to the big screen—with Jessica Biel and Jennifer Garner in the lead roles. “We’re gonna work on that,” the original show’s co-creator stated. “My sister Penny and Cindy are gonna have a guest cameo. They’re gonna walk “schlemiel, schlemazel”—or they’re gonna get tired in the middle and sit down.”
The Three Musketeers: There’s nothing Hollywood loves more than competing projects. Back in 2008, it was announced that Sherlock Holmes would be the subject of two new projects. Now, a producer/co-writer on Guy Ritchie’s recent film will be involved in one of two updates of The Three Musketeers. Although Paul W.S. Anderson had already announced a 3D-version of the classic Alexandre Dumas tale, Lionel Wigram is now going forward with his own swashbuckling tale. Scripting duties have been handed off to Peter Straughan (The Men Who Stare at Goats).
Dune: Producers behind the Dune reboot have assigned a new man to enhance the script. Chase Palmer (Shock and Awe) has been tasked with incorporating director Pierre Morel’s visions into the screenplay turned in by Josh Zetumer. If audiences like the result, Paramount may have a new franchise in its hands.
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas: Nearly 30 years after the first movie came out, Universal has decided the time is right to starting singing about whorehouses again. The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas - a musical that once starred Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton - will get new life under the producing hands of Dear John‘s Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey. Legally Blonde‘s Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith will adapt the story from the original 1978 Broadway play.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith: Will 20th Century Fox ever be able to find a couple as hot as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie? Probably not—but it looks like they are going to try. According to reports, the studio is attempting to retool the original spies-in-fake-marriage-who-really-want-to-kill-each-other story. The new Mr. and Mrs. Smith outing would supposedly involve two fresh academy recruits who are forced to play husband and wife.
A Star is Born: You’ve probably already heard that Warner Bros. is interested in reviving A Star is Born. But have you heard this casting gossip? Russell Crowe and Beyonce are reportedly the frontrunners the former Kris Kristofferson/Barbra Streisand roles. Interesting. Nick Cassavetes (My Sister’s Keeper) is in talks to helm the movie.
