Oprah - who has openly talked about her history with sexual abuse - hoped to play Mrs. Miller, the role Viola Davis may possibly receive an Oscar nod for. (Davis stars as mother whose son may/may not have been molested.) The Color Purple actress told Streep she wanted the part for two reasons: to work opposite Meryl once in her lifetime and to repeat three words from the film (“only ‘til June”).
Unfortunately for Winfrey, Shandley gave her “all the reasons why it would be ‘No’.” Although she did not specifically disclose his reasons, I’m guessing it’s because she would have been too big (no pun intended) for the part?
If you’ve seen the movie, tell us what you think. Could Oprah have handled that role?
