The original ‘45 production won six Academy Award nominations and brought in Crawford’s first win. The actress did not attend the ceremony, being ill at the time, eventually accepting the award in bed at home before members of the press.
The highly dramatic role centers on a mother of two daughters who all but literally goes to Hell and back for her oldest child. Hollywood gossip reports that Bette Davis first rejected the role of Mildred Pierce, only to have it snapped up by her most bitter rival.
