The Jim Henson children’s classic The Dark Crystal is slated for a sequel - a mere 28 years after the flick was first released. Featuring the puppetry Jim Henson was famous for, The Dark Crystal is an adventure tale featuring magic, friendship and your basic collision of good and evil forces. It’s a truly wonderful story…but does that mean it’s time to revisit the tale?

The new film will be dubbed The Power of the Dark Crystal, and will feature real puppetry alongside CGI. Likely it will be shown in 3D as well, since this is the latest Hollywood fad (thanks, Avatar). The Henson Co., together with an Australian production company, has been working on the movie for years. A statement about the sequel tells us that the flick is “set hundreds of years after the events of the first movie, when the world has once again fallen into darkness.” The movie “follows the adventures of a mysterious girl made of fire who, together with a Gelfling outcast, steals a shard of the legendary Crystal in an attempt to reignite the dying sun.”
So…it’s almost exactly the same plot as the first movie? And once again, all, the WGA is hard at work bringing you original scripts and original movie ideas. Now that Hollywood has exhausted its own supply of 80s-era horror flicks to re-exploit, we’re moving on to kid movies. Awesome.
