Even though they’ve had less than a week to become familiar with their family members once again, former Colombian hostages are now facing the prospect of having their story told on the big screen.

Last week, fourteen people - including three American contractors - were rescued from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia in a surprise mission. Some of those freed had been held captive since 2002.

The minute details were revealed about the carefully planned military operation, filmmakers everywhere recognized there was a great story waiting to be told. Although many in Hollywood are currently working to win rights to the story, it looks as if Simon Brand, a Colombian director, currently has the upper hand.

While it’s unclear how quickly the production can be turned around, Brand will be working with Vertigo Entertainment and Colombia’s RCN to secure financing soon. In the meantime, 46-year-old Ingrid Betancourt, a former Colombian presidential candidate, has already stated that she intends to write a play about her six-year ordeal.
