Nintendo: Mod Chips Are Illegal
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Mods/Hacks, Nintendo, Wii,
Nintendo of Europe issued a warning today, reminding Wii gamers against the dangers of using mod chips in their consoles. Nintendo’s terse warning reminds users that opening the console will void their warranty, potentially damage the console, and are considered illegal in many parts of the world. We’ve seen Nintendo go after resellers of “backup” devices before as well as developers of the flash memory cartridges for their handhelds. This warning, though, goes to end users – possibly the proliferation of chips for the Wii is driving this, or there may be gamers that are trying to get Wii consoles fixed after a US Super Paper Mario bricked their PAL console. At any rate, these warnings will fall on deaf ears in the modding community and will only make more users aware of the technology.

Two Live Arcade Titles For The Second Week Running

Somewhat shockingly, Microsoft is blessing Xbox 360 gamers with another two Live Arcade releases this week. After last week’s somewhat iffy Gyruss and 3D Ultra Mini Golf Adventures comes a couple of more interesting releases. The first is Eets: Chowdown, an updated version of the popular shareware release from Klei Entertainment. The gameplay has been described as a mix of The Incredible Machine and Lemmings, and the HD resolution 2D graphics look sharp for the Xbox 360 release. The game hits Wednesday for 800 MS Points ($10). Also in release this week is Pinball FX, which looks to be a pretty standard pinball release for the console. However, the game will support flipper control using the Xbox Live Vision camera, which seems like it would just be tiresome. The table art looks good, though, and appears to be tailored for HD resolutions. The game will also apparently support online multiplay as well. Pinball FX will also sell for 800 MS points.

Nintendo To Have Booth At Tokyo Game Show
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Nintendo, Nintendo DS, Role Playing Games, Square Enix,
Website Kotaku is indicating that in contrast to past shows, Nintendo will be exhibiting at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show. Typically the company has maintained its own separate shows, preferring to have an exclusive arena to advertise their upcoming software and hardware. This year, though, will apparently bring Nintendo to the show floor; according to Kotaku, the company is committing to this presence largely due to Square Enix showing off Dragon Quest IX for the Nintendo DS. This huge event, apparently, is enough to overcome Nintendo’s general avoidance of the show; having Nintendo and the latest Dragon Quest at the show may mean mayhem for show attendees.

Following the lead of the US PSP price cut, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced that they would be officially dropping the price of their handheld as well. Currently 149.99 GBP, or 199.99 Euro, the portable console will drop in price to 129.99 GBP and 169.99 Euro on May 4. According to GamesIndustry.biz, Platinum Hits titles for the PSP will also drop to 14.99 GBP. The PSP has somewhat been languishing while Sony focused its energies on the PS3 launch, but now it appears that the company is starting to get more aggressive as it attempts to build more market share.

Pelican Cools Off Your PS3 In Style

![PS3 Pelican Cooler Pic]({filedir_4}ps3_cooler_pelican.jpg)
IGN.com has got the first pics of the upcoming Air Flow Cooler for PS3, by Pelican, and it’s looking like a nice, unobtrusive peripheral for those that want to keep your PS3 extra cool. While I haven’t heard too many reports of overheating PS3’s, IGN claims to have gotten warnings about console temperatures during Blu-Ray playback, so we’ll take their word for it.
The PS3 Air Flow Cooler by Pelican will feature the same slick lines as the console itself, comes with it’s own AC adaptor (BOOO! There goes another outlet.), and uses so-called “Auto Thermo Sensing Technology” to regulate the fan speeds. We’re guessing that last one means it has some sort of thermometer built-in. The item looks nice enough… the only disadvantage I can see is taking up extra height for those of you that keep your PS3 standin’ tall. Of course, if you’ve got a PS3, space for game consoles probably isn’t of concern anyway (sorry, I couldn’t resist!). The cooler will be released in the “next few weeks” and retail for around $30 - not a bad investment considering that it may help your $600 console last a lot longer.

Wal-Mart to Sell $250 HD-DVD Player, Will Customers Notice?
Posted by Michael Cardiff Categories: Accessories, Hardware, PlayStation 3, Rumors, Xbox 360,
With all this talk of PS3s, 360s, and Wiis going around, it’s easy to forget that there’s also a next-gen video format war going on - one which will likely have severe repercussions for either Sony or M$. Well, the latest shot in the High-def disc format war has been fired, and this time it’s mega-retailer Wal-Mart that may help tip the scales in HD-DVD’s favor (or at least give Blu-Ray something to worry about).
This week, Wal-Mart announced that they would be producing and distributing an HD-DVD player that well be the cheapest available, coming in at around $199-$299. I haven’t spent much time in Wal-Marts (I find them noisy, messy, and crowded when compare to other retailers… oh, and generally evil). So I’ve got to ask… is Wal-Mart really a place where you want to pick up your next piece of high-end (or at least, moderate-end) electronics? My impression was that most of the folks who shop there probably aren’t too tuned-in to the next-gen DVD formats, and may not even own an HDTV set to take advantage of such hardware. Still, perhaps the lure of a ridiculously cheap HD player will pull a few bargain-hunting techno-fiends towards their blue glow. And hey wait, while we’re on the topic shouldn’t Target be the one promoting HD-DVD (think: slick red cases!), and Wal-Mart be the one promoting Blu-Ray? That would make much more chromatic sense, at least.

Top Ten Improvements in Halo 2 for Windows Vista

So, Halo 2 for Windows Vista is launching on May 8, 2007, and we have been able to spend some time reviewing the title. Since everyone is familiar with Halo 2, we felt a full review wasn’t in order. Instead, we wanted to clue you in on the ten best improvements we experienced while reviewing the game. These ten features raise the bar for Halo as a whole, and may be a foreshadowing of things to come in Halo 3:
Achievements: If you are looking for something fun that adds another level of fun and challenge to the Halo 2 world, this is it. We have said it before, and we will say it again - Microsoft hit a gold mine with the notion of achievements. No sooner than when we finished a multiplayer deathmatch did we rack up a total of three achievements. Meleeing five people from behind (and thusly earning the Ninja achievement) was nice, but Meleeing someone who already had the Ninja achievement (and thus earning the Flaming Ninja achievement) was even better. We have the achievement to prove it. For those wondering, yes, the achievements you earn in Halo 2 for Vista (or any other Games for Windows game) is counted towards your Xbox Gamerscore.

March NPD Data Hits, DS, PS2, Wii Lead Sales
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Hardware, Nintendo, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PSP, Xbox 360,
The NPD sales data for March has been released, and Gamasutra is reporting on the sales numbers. Overall, the sales data pretty much seemed to follow expectations. The Nintendo DS again showed strong sales, moving over 500,000 units in March. Sunday’s release of the latest in the Pokemon series might have the potential to even spike this further in April and May. The PSP sold 180,000; this month’s price drop would seem to ensure an increase for April. Of the non-portable consoles, the PS2 continues to have legs, moving 280,000 consoles and outselling all of the current generation platforms. This was probably helped a bit by the release of God of War II, which sold over 833,000 units.
Within current generation platforms, rankings stayed the same. The ever-supply-constrained Wii moved 259,000 consoles; Nintendo has promised more supply, but this may not happen for a few months. The Xbox 360 continued to hold on, with 199,000 units sold, and Sony’s sales numbers held relatively steady at 130,000 units.

Xbox 360 Spring Backward Compatibility Update Now Live
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Xbox, Xbox 360,
Xbox 360 owners looking for a backward compatibility update have been getting antsy over the couple of weeks, wondering if Microsoft had abandoned their efforts in improving the emulation for older Xbox titles. Now, though, a new update has been published online, with quite a few long anticipated additions to the list. Some great titles are now playable on the Xbox 360, including Panzer Dragoon Orta, Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, and Jet Set Radio Future. Mech Assault 2 is now playable, and Soul Calibur 2 received a mysterious compatibility update. Of course, no update would be complete without at least some questionable games that just happened to work because of other bug fixes, like Reservoir Dogs and NFL Fever 2004.
The full list of updated titles continues below.
