Some of those able to attend the event have been liveblogging the keynote, and are linked below.

Last night, Sony officially unveiled the PlayStation Home service, and it basically confirms a lot of what was said before. 1up has coverage of the new service, and from a high level, it is Sony’s attempt to tap into online game matchmaking, the success of Nintendo’s Mii avatars, and online content generation, all in one service. A high level description really doesn’t do the service justice for what a user can accomplish with the free online service, but 1up gives some great details about how PlayStation Home will operate along with a number of screenshots. More details are being revealed by Sony’s Phil Harrison at the keynote of the GDC.

Live For Windows Pricing Revealed?
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Internet, PC, Xbox 360, Xbox Live,
Microsoft has apparently revealed the pricing structure for their Live for Windows Vista gaming platform, according to Game Informer Online. Xbox 360 gamers should be familiar with the price structure; Gold accounts on Live for Windows Vista will cost the same as an Xbox Live Gold account. A one year subscription will sell for $49.99, with one month options selling for $7.99, and three months sell for $19.99. Also, those gamers that have both and Xbox 360 and a PC won’t have to subscribe twice, as a single subscription will work for both accounts. This pricing structure would seem to be great for Xbox 360 gamers, not so great for PC gamers. While Xbox gamers have gotten used to paying Microsoft for the privilege of playing online, this will be a new experience for PC gamers. It also remains to be seen if there really is a value proposition in Microsoft’s Vista offering, considering the competition in the PC space. For those PC gamers looking to play online against their Xbox 360 brethren, Live for Vista may be the only option, but consumers may find that mere online access to this competition plus Achievement and Gamerscore support my not be worth it.

Sakaguchi: Blue Dragon In August, Lost Odyssey December, PS3 “Difficult”
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, Role Playing Games, Xbox 360,
Mistwalker head and Final Fantasy originator Hironobu Sakaguchi today spoke at the GDC and filled in the US audience on the release dates for their RPGs in the US. Blue Dragon, the epic RPG with character design from Akira Torayama will hit the US in August. According to 1up, Lost Odyssey will ship in December for both the Japanese and US territories, with the DS RPG Ash hitting during the holidays as well. Sakaguchi also reported discussed his team’s investigation of the PS3 as a development platform; according to IGN, his thoughts so far are “PS3 is difficult.” It is a little shocking to hear that the company is looking to the PS3 already, but without knowing the exact details behind the company’s agreement with Microsoft, it would be difficult to say when or if something from Mistwalker would appear on the PS3.

Ubisoft has confirmed that the classic Konami arcade game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be coming to the Xbox Live Arcade in the near future. One of the best parts about the original arcade game was four-player support, and this will make its way over to the Xbox Live version, supporting co-op play locally or over Xbox Live. The game will sell for a mere 400 Points ($5) and should appear by the end of the month, to tie in with the upcoming movie release.

Q Entertainment today announced that Every Extend Extra Extreme would soon be coming to Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade service. The new version promises to take advantage of the HD resolutions available on the Xbox 360, and will supposedly support custom soundtracks from CD, according to Computer and Video Games. Mizuguchi did not say whether they would be splitting the game up into a million pieces while charging for each piece, but hopefully with the new Live Arcade size limits and the amount of feedback that Lumines Live got, the company and Microsoft will try and restrict the microtransactions for this release.

This Week’s Virtual Console Titles
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Nintendo, Retro, SEGA, Wii,
Nintendo continues to drop additional Virtual Console titles for the Wii; this week three new titles are available, one each for the NES, SNES, and Genesis. The biggest title this week would probably be Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts for the SNES at 800 Points. The game is one of the classic platformers for the SNES and was known for its graphical excellence on the console as well as its strong difficulty.
Sword of Vermillion at 800 Points for the Genesis is worth more as a novelty than anything else. The game is an early RPG, developed by AM2. AM2 is probably more well known for their arcade efforts, including Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter, but Sword of Vermillion does little but give some insight into the development team’s history. There are some interesting action-RPG type elements in the game, but otherwise, the title isn’t really that interesting.
Elevator Action for the NES at 500 Points steps back in time to early arcade-style gameplay. There’s not a lot of depth here, and it might be worth tracking down the original arcade version rather than playing the NES port, but there are worse games than this for the NES.

Microsoft Announces 512MB Memory Card, Ups Arcade Limit To 150 MB
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories:
Microsoft announced ahead of the GDC conference this week that they are officially announcing the 512 MB memory unit. Long rumored to be coming, the card will be available in April for $49.99, and will include Geometry Wars pre-installed. The 64 MB memory card will now sell for $29.99, down from $39.99.
Another rumor had Microsoft increasing the Xbox Live Arcade filesize limit from 50 MB. Microsoft also confirmed this rumor, stating that starting today, the file limit would now by 150 MB instead of 50 MB, more than likely in response to pressure from game developers as well as new competing content from Sony. While this may be too late to help the developers of Worms, other game developers will certainly benefit from the additional space.
Finally, previous leaks from the Microsoft Xbox Live development network showed that a version of Rare’s classic title Jetpak was in the works. Today’s press release also confirmed that Jetpac Refuelled, an enhanced version of the original would soon be coming, along with a couple of other previously unannounced titles, 3D Ultra Minigolf Adventures and Eets: Chowdown.

Insomniac Games is preparing a couple of updates for their flagship launch title for the PS3, Resistance: Fall of Man. Speaking with IGN, the company indicated there would be a couple of releases. First, a patch release in March will fix a bunch of multiplayer issues and exploits and will add two new game modes, “Team Conversion” and “Assault.” In May, gamers will see a downloadable expansion that will bring two new multiplayer maps along with some exposition regarding the backstory for the Resistance universe. No mention was made of any new weapons, or a cost for the map pack, but the IGN interview does offer a little insight into the plans to extend the life of the game world.

Stock Sale Gags Nintendo At GDC
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Nintendo, Nintendo DS, Wii,
Chris Kohler at Game|Life is reporting that a major stock trade in Japan is restricting what Nintendo will be able to say and announce at the Game Developer’s Conference next week. Because of this trade, Nintendo executives and developers will not be able to give any new information to the press due to stock trade laws controlling forward-looking statements. This may cause problems with Shigeru Miyamoto’s scheduled keynote, and any other new product announcements Nintendo might wish to make during the conference. The odd part this revelation is that Nintendo itself requested that the Japanese government initiate the trade, which makes the timing of the request very strange. With Sony already looking to possibly show off their new community features and upcoming game releases like Killzone, and Microsoft also showing off their latest content and hardware offerings, this may push Nintendo into the background.
