Thieves Den

PC and Xbox 360 Oblivion owners can download the Thieves Den module now, for $1.89 or 150 Marketplace Points respectively. According to Bethesda’s site, the new content features:

  • A fully detailed environment for your character to own and explore
  • Free sleeping space: never pay for an inn again!
  • Five upgrades for your lair
  • Hire vendors designed especially for thieves, rogues, and assassins
  • As you upgrade your lair new pirates will join your crew and provide you with income
  • Over 45 new items
  • 15 new spells

The content does seem to offer a great deal more than previous offerings, and so far has gotten a fair amount of praise in the Oblivion forums. Apparently the mod is inspired by the Goonies, so maybe gamers will be teaming up with Chunk and Sloth to take on Ma Fratelli and her boys.

DS BlackNintendo of Europe today announced pricing and availability for the DS Lite. Officially launching on June 23, the DS Lite will come in two colors, white and black, and will sell for £99.99 or 149.99 Euros, or about $190 in US dollars. For right now, it looks like Europe will be the only territory to get the fourth color, with Japan currently offering the original white, navy, and light blue, and for US it looks like just the enamel white version. It was also announced that Europe would see New Super Mario Bros. on June 30, so at least the US can enjoy their white DS Lites and Mario for a couple of weeks before Europe.

Nintendo DS LiteThe latest sales data from Japan for the week ending May 14 is in. The PS2 game Jikkyou Powerful Major League, the latest in the popular baseball series, charted in at number one. However, six of the other titles on the top ten list were games for the Nintendo DS. In terms of hardware sales, the DS still dominates in Japan as both the DS Lite and the original DS combining to sell approximately 95,000 units, with the PSP following behind with around 27,000 consoles sold. Things still look grim for the Xbox 360 in Japan, selling 1,355 units, only 30% more than the Gamecube. Tetris DS was the most popular DS title, and it looks like at least on the portable side, Nintendo’s strategies seem to be paying off well.

Final Fantasy XIII

Some new Final Fantasy XIII scans have surfaced over at The Magic Box, and it looks like at least some of the images have been pulled from the E3 trailer, but some of them may be new. The higher-resolution scans show off some of the environment of the new Final Fantasy game, and some of the action sequences as well. As Square-Enix continues to make graphical improvements to the in-game segments of the game, it becomes increasingly difficult to separate the interactive sequences from the pre-rendered narrative sections, but given the power of the PS3, this definitely will be the best looking Final Fantasy game to date. No release date has been announced for either Japan or the United States, but the new game will definitely be a strong draw for the PS3.

PS3In an interview with Computer and Videogames Magazine, David Reeves, CEO of Sony Entertainment Europe has confirmed that at least three titles will be delayed beyond the European launch of the Playstation 3. It’s unclear whether this means that the titles will be impacted for the US launch as well, but given that the titles have apparently been delayed to 2007, the games may very well not be on schedule for any territory. Heavenly Sword is probably the highest profile of the titles to see a delay, but Formula One and Motorstorm are also supposedly going to miss the console launch as well. On the positive side of things, Insomniac’s latest, Resistance: Fall of Man is scheduled to make the launch window, but Sony has to be hoping that other high profile games won’t slip as well, further reducing their 15 game launch total.

Gears of War Documentary

For those gamers that missed the show on Friday, or will manage to miss one of the five thousand re-airings of the documentary, Gears of War: The Race to E3, MTV has the show available for streaming online, along with some bonus footage not shown on the air, including some more in-depth footage with Cliff Bleszinksi and Tim Sweeney, and some insights into motion capture and art direction. In some ways, the additional footage is more worthwhile than the documentary aired, but there is some playtest footage where gamers can get glimpses of Gears of War in action.

More after the jump…

Phantasy Star OnlinePSO-World has managed to grab an interview with Takao Miyoshi, producer of the upcoming update in the Phantasy Star Online series, Phantasy Star Universe. While the sequel promises that everything in the game will be bigger and better than before, the biggest development will be the new offline gameplay, featuring a more well-developed storyline that should offer hours of single user play, much more than has previously been offered in the past. Also briefly discussed were the new racial abilities integrated into the game, and the new vehicles like player-controlled fire-breathing dinosaurs. In terms of the online world, the old lobby system will be replaced by larger in-game worlds, that can host up to 1000 people. The segregation of the PS2/PC users and the Xbox 360 users was also touched on, and interestingly, the final decision on splitting the game servers has not been set yet; hopefully, all PSU users will be able to play in the same server environment. No Wii or PS3 support is currently in the cards, but from the interview, it sounds like this may still be a possibility, leveraging the special controllers for both. Phantasy Star Universe should ship in the US in the latter half of 2006.

Xecuter KitTeam Xecuter has announced that their DVD and hard drive connectivity kits should start shipping in the upcoming week. The hard drive connectivity kit should operate similarly to the previously announced adapters from companies like 360 Sata and Datel, but the DVD adapter is a little more interesting, since it would give people interested in connecting their Xbox 360 DVD drives to their computers without having to leave the drives connected to a powered up Xbox 360. Team Xecuter also hints that a USB connectivity solution is near, and that work is continuing on dual firmware solutions for those “experimenters” who might want to run alternate firmware versions on their DVD drive.

In case you missed the Peter Moore interview that was posted over at Gear Live, check it out by clicking above. Peter goes into detail on subjects like Lumines Live, the HD DVD drive, Xbox Live Vision camera, and more. Especially interesting are his thoughts on the PlayStation 3, and how Sony is using it as a juggernaut to push the Blu-Ray format.

MTV2 will be airing their mini-documentary featuring Epic Games, and focusing on the preparation work that went led up to their presence at E3 2006. Major Nelson has some of the details on his blog, but the show itself will be airing Friday, May 19th, at 10:00 PM ET/PT. Of course, this will air multiple times over the next couple of weeks, so those who don’t set their TiVo in time will have additional chances, and the future airings are listed on the Major Nelson blog. The marketing guys at Gamerscoreblog have also posted a promo and some pre-release clips on YouTube as well. From the clips, it looks like there is going to be some actual meat to the show, with nary a hobbit to be seen from last year’s MTV Xbox 360 non-event. Hopefully in addition to seeing developers sweat, there will be actual information about the game, but with the focus on the E3 presentation, there may not be a lot there.
