MLB 2K6 Features Dynamic Advertising

Major League Baseball Advanced Media, the MLB Player’s Association, Take-Two Interactive, and Massive Incorporated have reached a deal to include dynamic advertisements in 2K Sports latest release, Major League Baseball 2K6. Potentially, this agreement could lead to advertisements appearing in other sports games under the 2K Sports brand.
It is not known at this time how the advertisements will appear in-game; potentially these could appear in-game as advertisements around the ballpark, as well as during between inning interstitials. How obtrusive these ads are will greatly impact player’s acceptance of the advertising. It is also doubtful that monetizing advertising in this way will result in a savings for the gamer buying the titles, as well. Also, if the advertisements replace stadium-based banners and decoration, would the companies paying money to display their corporate logos in the physical locations have some say in how these are displayed virtually?

Breakdown Of Oblivion PC vs Xbox 360

GameSpot has an excellent article breaking down the differences between the Xbox 360 and the PC versions of Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. Those people with low to high-end PC configurations and an Xbox 360 can now decide which is the best platform to experience Oblivion. The Xbox 360 version will definitely offer more “tuned” performance for smooth gameplay out of the box, but users will obviously lose access to the significant online mod communities that were built up around previous Elder Scrolls releases. PC users will more than likely have to do some tuning and tweaking to get the best performance out of Oblivion and the graphical experience will likely be for the worse on anything but high-end PCs.
GameSpot also compares load times; potentially the PC could have better load times, but the Xbox 360 isn’t extremely slow to load. It would have been interesting to see a comparison of the load times on the Xbox 360 with and without the external hard drive, however.
Gamespot does an excellent job of laying out the differences, and for people who already have the hardware and aren’t considering upgrading to bigger and badder tech, the guide certainly sets expectations for the user experience in various configurations. However, when the question of upgrading comes around, things are a little more murky, and the choices will come down to budget and personal preference.

Nintendo Reports 97 Billion Yen Profit

According to Reuters, Nintendo has reported a 97 billion yen profit for 2005/6. This is a 27% increase over their projected profit of 75 billion yen, and represents and 8% increase from last year’s 87.4 billion yen.
Nintendo credits favorable exchange rates and the incredible success of the Nintendo DS for its profit increase.

Play-asia.com currently has both the Enamel Navy and Ice Blue DS Lites in stock for $199.90 plus shipping, so if you just can’t wait for the more compact, brighter DS to hit stateside, this may be your chance. Users might want to consider that imported units will be difficult to impossible to return for warrantee repair, so if your DS Lite has dead pixels, you may be stuck with them. NCSX.com, at least, has warned that a fair number of the DS Lites they have received have had dead pixels, saying:
“Unavoidably, they are present on the NDS Lite. The five NDS Lites that we kept for our company use all have 1 to 6 dead pixels and there’s a better than average chance that the NDS Lite that you purchase will have dead pixels as well. Dead pixels on new hardware products such as the NDS Lite are common and manufacturers will not accept returns because of them - recall the PSP situation from 2004.”

Michigan Video Game Law Ruled Unconstitutional

Michigan’s proposed state law to make it a misdemeanor to sell video games rated Mature or Adults Only to minors has been ruled unconstitutional by the Honorable George Caram Steeh, of the US District Court, Eastern District of Michigan. Steeh had previously delayed implementation of the law in November, handing out a preliminary injunction while indicating that the law would more than likely not pass constitutional muster. Today’s ruling makes the injunction permanent.
Michigan state’s claim that video games were somehow less protected under the First Amendment were rejected in whole by the Judge, who ruled “that video games contain creative, expressive free speech, inseparable from their interactive functional elements, and are therefore protected by the First Amendment.” Steeh also ruled that the state’s expert witness failed to prove that “video games have ever caused anyone to commit a violent act, as opposed to feeling aggressive, or have caused the average level of violence to increase anywhere.”

New Super Mario Brothers Delay:

Nintendo launched their preview site for the New Super Mario Brothers game for the Nintendo DS, and it came with some bad news. According to the site, the official release date for the game is now May 21, 2006, a week’s delay from the last announced date. EBGames.com still has the game listed as coming in on May 15, 2006, but gamers can expect that to change. Nintendo softens the blow somewhat by offering some desktop wallpapers for download on the site.
Update: The official site release date has been changed back to May 15, 2006.

Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth II Screens

TeamXbox has four new screenshots for EA’s summer release of Battle for Middle Earth II on the Xbox 360. Screenshots can’t capture how fluid the gameplay will be, but the shots show off some pretty crazy water and shadow effects with a high level of texture detail. Here’s hoping EA can translate the RTS gameplay that has traditionally been restricted to the realm of the PC so that gamers can experience Battle in all its high-defination, surround sound glory.
