Final Fantasy IIIFor all you Japanese-fluent Final Fantasy addicts looking to import the FF III DS remake, MTV is reporting that August 24th, 2006 has been set as the Japanese release date. They also note that the price is somewhat higher than normal - 5,980 yen (about $53!). Given that pricing on other DS games in Japan is slightly higher than normal, this suggests that FFIII will retail for somewhere around $45 in the states. Lik-sang is currently listing $49.90 as the price for those of you looking to import early - not bad!

The game is scheduled to come state-side in September. Isn’t it nice to see Nintendo and Square playing nice again?

DescriptionAs Playfeed previously reported, Target and other retailers have broken the street date for the new slimfast loving Nintendo DS Lite.  Today I spent roughly 2 hours in search of this elusive mobile gaming platform.  The new DS lite is set to be released on Sunday June 11th here in the US, but on May 30th DS Lites started appearing on shelves across the country.

Today I traveled to Walmart, Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, Gamestop, EB Games, Meijer and Sears searching for some mobile enjoyment.  I wound up empty handed but still hopeful that I can find a DS Lite before the street date.  The stores that I searched today are located in Findlay, OH and Toledo, OH and I can officially say that there are no DS Lites for sale in Findlay, OH.  The closest I got to a DS lite was an open spot in the Meijer game cabinet which had a UPC that said DS Lite.  If you want to check for locations near you that are breaking the street date follow the Read More link for the DS Lite availability Frappr map.  Good Luck!

Wii!Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata recently talked to reporters from Japanese magazine Tech On!, about the Wii, and its impact on the next generation of gaming, and Nintendo’s approach for the upcoming console battle. Interestingly, the fundamental technological research for the Wii controller started three years ago, and had a focused task force created 2 years ago. Nintendo continued to tweak the controller late into its development cycle, with the last minute addition of the speaker.

Also interesting is Iwata’s statement that the Wii is not a “next generation” console; that’s not to say that the Wii isn’t an improvement over the Gamecube, but Nintendo’s interpretation is that “next generation” implies an extension of what has come before, and they want to push the Wii as something totally different. Taking the offerings from Sony and Microsoft as an example, the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360 are generally considered the next version of the previous consoles, and Nintendo clearly would like to distance the Wii from the Gamecube, both in the eyes of gamers and non-gamers alike.

Iwata also briefly touches on what Nintendo’s goals are with the Internet for the Wii. With the introduction of WiiConnect24, the hope is that Wii consoles will be connected to the Internet 24 hours a day, and will be able to receive updates at any time, and allow users to share game content even when not playing. Gamers could look to Animal Crossing: Wild World for the DS for some hints to this. On the DS, when users connect to friends, they can also get content from Nintendo at the same time. A theoretical Wii version could do the same on a larger scale, allowing content downloads overnight, and allow friends to visit other towns even when the user isn’t playing the game at the same time, allowing for a broader range of interactions.

Xbox 360Despite Peter Moore’s dismissal of Xbox 360 backwards compatibility as a mainstream feature, there will be a new compatibility update coming from Microsoft in the next few weeks which is expected to add support to “at least a dozen titles.” The Xbox 360 marketing guys at Gamerscoreblog pinned down the compatibility team and got the skinny on the update; the next release is in testing now, and they are still fully committed to getting as many titles as possible on the backwards compatibility list. Here’s hoping the next update gets gamers more titles like Mech Assault and nothing with the word Barbie in the name.

Famitsu was able to talk to a bunch of the Japanese developers at E3 to get their opinions on the next generation of consoles, and Next Generation has the translation. The opinions seem to be pretty much off-the-cuff remarks, so there’s not a lot of heavy or in-depth information, and most of the response is positive for all consoles. Famitsu was able to talk to developers from Capcom, Tecmo, Sega, Namco, and more.

Amongst the praise for the new consoles, a few insults were tossed, most notably from the outspoken game designer from Team Ninja, Tomonobu Itagaki, who reportedly said, “It is most interesting to see Sony made the decisive judgment to revert the PlayStation 3 controller to its true shape. It takes great bravery for a company to change something that has already been announced.” He is still probably the Xbox 360’s biggest backer in Japan, as well, declaring “America’s love for the Xbox 360 has yet to waver. If only America would just explain Japan why they love the Xbox 360 already…” and also suggested that he might consider developing a title for Nintendo’s Wii, if only to give a break to people between their sessions of Dead or Alive Extreme 2.

Overall, however, developers seemed genuinely interested in how the Wii controller will shake things up, some effusive, while some were cautious about how well the controller would really take hold in the market. Concerns were expressed over the PS3 price, but many thought that the hardware was strong and the networking possibilities were intriguing.

Following last weeks brutal murder of a Florida man, Jack Thompson has asked authorities to search the teenager’s home for video games.  The detectives searched the suspects home and found M rated video games.  Jack Thompson became involved in the case after reading a report about the crime which “raised a red flag” in his mind.  While murder is no laughing matter Jack Thompson’s description of an individual who shoots someone in the face is.

“Nobody shoots anybody in the face unless you’re a hit man or a video gamer.” - Jack Thompson

Jack Thompson goes on to state that the circumstances of the crime are similar to that of GTA, because the juvenile wanted to borrow a car and then killed for it.  Funny, I don’t remember playing that mission last time I booted up.  Thankfully the article provides a counterpoint by an industry rep who points out that teenage violence predates video games.  The full article contains a few more Jack Thompson gems.

The Louisiana Senate Judiciary Committee recently approved a piece of violent video game legislation for debate in the state senate.  The bill, HB1381, was originally authored by Representative Roy Burrell with the help of Jack Thompson, the one-time “Man in Miami”, and vocal critic of violent video games and media entertainment.

Critics of the bill, such as New Orleans William Rittenburg, claim that it is too vague in its definition of violence. If passed, the bill would fine those who sell violent video games to minors between $100 and $1000, and in addition face serving up to a year in prison.

According to German gaming website Game Front, the original Nintendo DS may soon cease production. This news comes as several Japanese retailers have claimed that they have not received their orders for the original DS for over a month; instead retailers have been receiving shipments of the new Nintendo DS Lite. This has fueled speculation that Nintendo may be phasing out the original DS in favor of the Lite, which has seen spectacular sales since it first launched in Japan in March of this year. Currently, Nintendo has not yet issued a statement confirming or denying the rumor.
