Latest Gear Live Videos

New videos are beginning to surface via YouTube of Intelligent System’s upcoming 2d action/RPG hybrid Super Paper Mario. Previously, there was almost no official info for the title other than a 30 second trailer at E3.  Based on gameplay footage from the videos, Super Paper Mario looks to be the spiritual successor to the 2004 GameCube title Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. The series has always taken an untraditional, humorous approach to the RPG genre and is taking that one step further this time with the inclusion of classic 2d Mario gameplay, various playable characters such as Bowser and Peach, and even the ability to switch between 2D and 3D viewpoints in order to discover new paths. Super Paper Mario is set to be released in Japan on August 3rd and will reach US shores a few months later on October 9th. Heres hoping this promising title isn’t overlooked amidst the hype of the upcoming Nintendo Wii launch.

DS game Tic Tac case

This past weekend I was in the need for a case for the few DS games I own, and luckily a Tic Tac case was nearby.  After removing the Tic Tac wrapper and cleaning up the case a little bit, I was left with a carrying case that was perfect for toting 3 Nintendo DS games. It’s almost like all of these mint manufacturers plan for the re-use of their cases in the gaming community, what with the Altoids PSP game cases and all.

DIY Game Chair

Do you feel full of jealousy any time you spy an arcade racing setup being used to own others in Ridge Racer or Project Gotham Racing 3?  Store bought racing chairs are often poorly constructed and expensive or good quality and even more expensive.  Over on the ToolMonger blog there is a how-to for making your own racing chair setup for just $80 in parts.  All you need after parts is the racing wheel and pedals for your particular system.  The project requires welding and isn’t for everyone.  If you decide to tackle the project, the original makers recommend a $380 welder, which is quite cheap for a quality welder.  Judging from all the required welding it is a good thing that video games are good for hand eye coordination.

If you don’t have the hands on ability to make your own, or are just too busy playing video games, ToolMonger is giving one away!  To enter, just post a comment somewhere on their site by July 31st.

Frontline Fuel of War screenshot

Kaos Studios, the company developing Frontline Fuel of War, has made available the trailer which was shown at E3.  Fuel of War is a FPS set for release in the Fall of 2007 and is being published by THQ.  The game will be available on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. Judging from early screen shots it looks impressive.

Game Overview:

Set in a fictional near future based upon the headlines of today, FFOW brings players into the world’s next great war.  As society succumbs to a worldwide energy crisis, a new global depression takes hold.  Amidst this gritty backdrop two superpower alliances emerge.  Join the battle on the frontlines of tomorrow as the Western Coalition (U.S./E.U.) or the Red Star Alliance (Russia/China).

Sadly the release date of 2007 underscores the shortage of next gen games available for play this summer or even this year.

Michael MadsenMichael Madsen and Mark Hamill headline the US vocal talent for the upcoming release of the PS2’s Yakuza, released last year in Japan as Ryo ga Gotoku. Joining them are fellow voice-acting veterans Michael Rosenbaum (Gladius, Justice League, and Smallville), Eliza Dushku (Buffy the Vampire Slayer series and video game), and Rachel Leigh Cook (Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Kingdom Hearts II, and She’s All That). In an interview with Gamespot, Yakuza’s US producer, Justin Lambros, explained that space constraints prevented the game from including both English and Japanese dialogue, but added that all of the American actors “put a piece of themselves into their character.”

The gritty, GTA-influenced game is due to ship in September.

LucasArts“When you have EA failing to bring Superman out with the movie, that’s inexcusable. Moving games like Medal of Honor and Godfather out of the fourth quarter -– that’s the old way of thinking and you can’t do that any more.”

In an interview with MCV, a British trade magazine, LucasArts president Jim Ward argues that over-budget and late-shipping games hurt the industry as a whole, and cites EA as an example of bad behavior. He goes on to suggest that other developers should adopt the LucasArts policy to “make kick-ass games, but on time and on budget. Failure on any one of those three points is failure for the project.”

EA has yet to respond, but one has to speculate if this business mantra was the driving force behind the seemingly premature release of KOTOR 2…

A recovering addict As hard-core video game playing becomes a mainstream pastime, medical science is discovering some disturbing side affects. Video game playing is now being looked at and treated as an addiction by an emerging field. Keith Bakker, director of Smith & Jones Addiction Consultants, stated “Video games may look innocent, but they can be as addictive as gambling or drugs, and just as hard to kick.” His agency has created the first detoxification center for videogame addicts. The center, located in the Netherlands, plans to use a 4-8 week program to help gamers beat their addictions.

As with other dependencies, videogame addicts evidence certain symptoms when going through withdrawal. Bakker has treated some 20 videogames addicts and has observed reactions such as sweats and shaking. Because scientific research into the effects of long-term habitual videogame playing is just beginning, much of this is uncharted territory. And so the experts are still arguing over the nature of the “disease.” Meanwhile, troubled gamers are already seeking help via Mr. Bakker’s agency.

Red Lights of DoomA gamer over in the ArsTechnica forums detailed how he was able to resurrect his Xbox 360 from the “three red lights” problem. Now, in this particular instance, he was able to grab a secondary error code that said the GPU was overheating, so those gamers that are getting the “lights of doom” should try and figure out what the actual issue is before diving into the console. Also, if your console is still under warranty, just get it fixed by Microsoft. There are pretty detailed instructions and pictures on how to disassemble the Xbox 360 and remove the thermal pad, but gamers attempting this fix probably shouldn’t try and use 409 to remove the thermal paste, since the cleaner doesn’t seem to react very well with aluminum; isopropyl alcohol might be a better solution here. At any rate, if you aren’t afraid of digging around the interior of the Xbox 360, and your warranty is already expired, it might be worth a shot to try and re-apply the thermal paste to the GPU. It is somewhat strange how often thermal issues have been affecting hardware recently, with both the Xbox 360 and the Macbook/Macbook Pro issues from Apple.
