A US District Court Judge has issued a temporary restraining order against the five-day-old Louisiana law, after the ESA and IEMA (Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association) sued the state, claiming the law’s unconstitutionality.  The law, written by Democratic Representative Roy Burrell with help from the infamous Jack Thompson, classifies violent video games as obscenity, using the same guidelines that govern sexual obscenity – most notably that such games lack “serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.”  In an interview, Thompson stated that he believes in the law’s constitutionality, but added that it is “impossible ‘to predict what a court is going to do.’”  Jeez; you’d think an attorney would have more insight into the legal process than that…

The official hearing will take place on June 30.

Opera DS LiteOpera Software, fresh from announcing their Opera 9 browser for personal computers, announced today that the Opera Browser would be available on July 24th for Japanese users. The pricing was previously announced to be 3,800 Yen, or roughly $33. Since DS titles have no region lock, gamers should expect to be able to import this from places like Lik-Sang or NCSX.com. The memory expansion cartridge included with the browser was not addressed—two versions of this cartridge have been shown, one for the DS and one for the DS Lite, and it is unclear whether there will actually be two SKUs released when this hits the market. It will be interesting to compare this with the custom PSP browser; the DS would have the edge in vertical resolution, assuming the user is in dual-screen browsing mode, but offers only about 2/3 the pixels horizontally. The stylus input should be much easier to handle than selection via the analog pad on the PSP, and depending on how much memory is available in the RAM expansion, more pages might be able to cached in memory. Given that the DS has much less main memory than the PSP, the expansion cart will be critical to the operation of the Opera on the DS. Feedback was generally good at E3, and, of course, Japanese users and importers will find out come late July.

Warhammer Online
Just days after THQ’s statements that it would be foolish to enter the MMORPG market against World of Warcraft, EA announced today that they would be acquiring Mythic Entertainment, publishers and developers of Dark Age of Camelot and developers of the new Warhammer Online massively multiplayer game. While Mythic is no slouch in the industry, their experience combined with EA’s resources makes them much more of a contender at this point. Should the integration process go well, the acquisition will hopefully mean that gamers will see more high-quality online role playing games hit the market.

Full Press Release after the jump.

Ds Lite  The good folks over at Mojodo have put together yet another Nintendo DS Lite essentials list.  The list does a good job of breaking down major DS titles into 3 categories; Buy, Consider, and Skip.  The titles are further broken down into touch based games, traditional games and multiplayer offerings.  Recommended purchases include Trauma Center, Advance Wars DS, and Mario Kart DS to name a few.  The focus on games makes for a great companion to 4 color rebellion’s DS Lite Buyers Guide and well worth checking out for new Nintendo DS Lite owners!

DescriptionIGN was able to score an interview with David Ortiz who is currently working on the Madden 07 offering for next gen systems.  Ortiz confirms that Madden 07 will include Superstar mode, which was one of the many features missing from Madden 06 on the Xbox 360.  The new and improved Superstar mode was added after EA heard the complaints of gamers and had already shaped up much of the onfield play.  In the new NFL Superstar Hall of Fame Mode you can control a character from their point of view. You don’t choose the plays, and if your position is on the offense, then you can opt not to play defense.  The changes to the Superstar mode will definitely mix up your play to play role in the game, David Ortiz explains,

Before every drive, you select your role in the scheme. Using the receiver example, you can play as a Possession Receiver, and this will increase your catching ability and the QB accuracy. You can play as a Burner, and this will send you deep, affecting not only your speed and awareness, but it will also negatively affect the rating of the CB trying to cover you one-on-one. Or you can be the Lone Wolf, forgetting about the team game and trying to rack up as many yards and catches as possible. As a cornerback, your roles are Coverage DB, a Blitz Specialist, or again, the Lone Wolf. This all leads to character development and how you’re viewed as a teammate, adding extra depth beyond simply catching passes over the middle or picking off a pass and trying to take it to the house.

The Superstar mode is a much needed addition to the next gen Madden franchise which debuted with a very lackluster Xbox 360 version last fall.  Madden 07 is due out for the Xbox 360 and current gen systems on August 22nd followed shortly by the PS3 release on November 1st.  You can also spend an extra $10 to get the “Hall of Fame” edition which includes a bonus video disc chock full of John Madden!

Tales PSP

Today, Bandai Namco announced the next games in their Tales RPG series, with new screen shots of the games. Siliconera has some details, and Game Watch Japan has full coverage of the announcement by Bandai Namco in Japan. There are a few remakes in the list, including a “full voice edition” release of Tales of Phantasia for the PSP, a remake of the Playstation 1 game, which itself was a remade version of the original Super Nintendo release. The Playstation 2 will see another remake, this time of the original Playstation game, Tales of Destiny, with redone 2D graphics. Tales of Destiny 2 should also see a home on the PSP, some time in 2007, as a remake of the Playstation 2 game. The PSP also gets a new game in the Tales of the World series. Finally, the DS game, Tales of the Tempest was also previewed.

Peter MooreThe final of Edge’s interviews with the various “heads of state” of the three console competitors has now been published, as they talk to Microsoft’s Peter Moore on the Xbox 360. This is probably the least “technical” of the interviews, given that Microsoft has already launched their hardware into the market, and instead focuses on the gaming experience that people will see on the Xbox 360. Moore comments that he liked what he saw of the Wii controller, but didn’t really see the benefit of the Playstation 3 controller. Of course, given that there weren’t that many titles on the PS3 that featured motion sensitivity, there really wasn’t a good chance to see what developers could really do with the new technology, and how well it would stack up to the Wii.

Edge kind of slams Microsoft for the prevalence of first person shooters on the Xbox 360, but realistically, this is a reflection on the current focus of the industry, and not something that is tied to the Xbox 360. Of course, the Wii should offer more varied experiences, but this is more of a reflection of Nintendo’s development practices than anything else. But to slam the Xbox 360 for the games that third party developers choose to focus on seems a bit harsh, since the gaming industry basically is just following the money trail.

Of course, Moore also talks Xbox Live Arcade, which currently seems to be the path that Microsoft sees to the casual gamer. With the numbers Uno has seen, this seems to be working. Other titles like Lumines may also help drive this, though it’s hard to see where a gamer would decide to spend $400 on a console to get Lumines and Uno exclusively. But gaming experiences like this may expand the mindset of customers that the Xbox 360 doesn’t just offer hardcore gaming experiences.

Soul Calibur IVIn a recent interview over at GameDaily, Daisuke Uchiyama, the Chief Producer at Namco-Bandai mentioned that Soul Calibur IV is currently in development for the Playstation 3. Additionally, Uchiyama commented that Tekken 6 will be heading straight to the Playsation 3, skipping its initial arcade run. In light of this recent news, as well as Soul Calibur III first appearing on the PS2, it seems likely that Soul Calibur IV is set to follow suit. While undoubtedly a huge blow to the niche, but still heavily active arcade fighting game scene, all hope is not lost. Soul Calibur III: Arcade Edition recently debuted in Japan, a full 6 months after its console release and added various balancing tweaks/character fixes. Perhaps a similar “console first, arcade later” release plan is in the cards for Tekken 6 and other Namco-Bandai developed fighters.

World of WarcraftBlizzard has made available the latest content update and software patch release for World of Warcraft today. The new patch brings the client version up to 1.11.0 and has several significant changes. Leading the new content is a new 40-man raid available from the Plaguelands, called Naxxramas, which promises to be one of the most challenging raids to date. In addition, there are a number of functionality tweaks and updates, including new key ring functionality, an adjustment to some of the material item stacks, and a re-categorization of consumables in the game. Flight paths have been updated in the new release, with new flight paths at Ratchet and Marshall’s Refuge, and there are a number of new paths between endpoints throughout the game. In conjunction with the new raid content in the Plaguelands, the Light’s Hope Chapel has been upgraded to a full quest hub- with an inn, new vendors, and a bunch of new quests. Other raid and dungeon instances have been tweaked as well. There are also a number of changes to various classes, with the biggest changes being made to the Shaman and Mage classes, but most classes should see some alteration of their talents in the upgrade.

For those who prefer to download the patch, rather than use Blizzard’s downloader utility, there are a number of mirrors, including 3dgamers and FilePlanet:
