Ace Combat X

GameWatch Japan has a new preview of Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception for the PSP. The PSP continuation of the fighter jet series is scheduled to hit Japan in Fall 2006, and the new screenshots look exceptional for a PSP game. As previously announced, the game will support multi-player combat utilizing ad hoc wireless networking. GameWatch has new screens of the multi-player interface. The screen-shots show off six possible base multi-player modes, with a “random” setting for quick play. Drilling down into the game modes shows a large set of configurable options for each basic online play mode, so the PSP should provide a large selection of battle types. Furthermore, it looks like a combination of 4 live players and 4 AI bots can be combined into two teams for battle, and plane type and ammunition payloads can be configured individually as well.

The fictional plane XFA-27, featured in Ace Combat 2, will make its appearance in the PSP release, and it will be joined by another Namco creation, the XFA-24A Apalis. Real-life planes shown in the preview include the Su-27 Flanker, the Eurofighter Typhoon , the F-5E Tiger II, and the Mitsubishi F-1.

With the large selection of planes, the abundance of multi-player modes (though sadly, infrastructure mode support has not been announced), and great graphical detail, this looks to be a worthy addition to the Ace Combat franchise.

Xbox Live Friends?

Japanese site Game Watch has some UI shots of what looks like an extension to the Xbox Live interface, with something called “Xbox Friends.” From the screenshots, it looks like this is some kind of Macromedia Flash-based interface to finding and matching with friends online. Registration apparently opens on July 7th, in Japan, with users registering before July 10th getting entered in a drawing for Microsoft Points. The preview shots for the application seem to indicate that gamers will be able to search interactively for gamers with similar gamer profiles, with visual mapping indicating how close of a match they are, and then there is a “gamer score” view that allows you to compare your score with others. No word on whether similar functionality will be hitting other territories. Gamers interested in trying to decode more information should hit up their favorite online translation utility to try and find out more.

Halo Mural

Bungie.net reports on very dedicated Halo fan Namloco’s “ultimate Halo room.” The room contains a ton of Halo memorabilia, a lot of it collected from eBay, but the thing that ties the room together is really the mural dominating the walls of the room. Proving his dedication to the temple of Bungie, he had the artwork for the cover of Edge Magazine transferred, larger than life, into his gaming den. The mural was copied from the original art by 4 artists, at a cost of approximately $2,000. Namloco isn’t finished yet, saying to Bungie, “No way am I done. I left a wall to the right of the Chief to expand. Maybe a life size gun rack in the pelican so visitors may have their weapon of choice on hand.”

DS BrowserOn July 23rd Nintendo is releasing the Opera browser for the Nintendo DS and DS Lite in Japan.  The package will retail for about $33 USD and includes a DS “cartridge” with the browser on it and a GBA cartridge which holds memory for the browser.  An individual who has some connections in the Opera community was able to score some hands on time with the new browser and has posted his initial reactions.

When I started it up I was browsing in dual screen mode. Basically the page was fit to the width of the screen and the height spanned both screens. With an easy touch of the stylus you can switch into a “zoom” mode where you are presented with a picture of the web page on the top screen and on the bottom screen you can drag a box around to see in actual size what you need to view. You can also simply swap the screens so that you can type in text as needed where fields or check boxes etc. are presented.

Jon answers even more usability questions and includes a lot of other answers about the operation of a browser on the Nintendo DS.  Anyone else have trouble reading that browser instead of Bowser?  With the naming prowess they have recently shown us I am surprised its not called the Bowser browser.

GameDaily was able to talk with Takashi Tezuka, General Producer for Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development (NEAD) at E3. In his career with Nintendo, Tezuka has worked on, in some capacity, a great number of the most popular games in the past twenty years. Including the Mario, Zelda, and Yoshi properties, and titles like Animal Crossing. He offers insight into the Wii, particularly the unique controller, and the reasoning behind including a speaker in the hardware. Tezuka also talks about Mario on the DS, stating that New Super Mario Bros. had been in the works since Super Mario DS was in development. He also lets slip that another 3D Mario game on the DS is a possibility. Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass was also discussed, and how its origins came largely from a desire of the developers at Nintendo to create another game in the distinct Wind Waker style.

Tomb Raider Legend PSPTomb Raider: Legend came out today for Sony’s PSP and is already a steal!  Fry’s Electronics has Tomb Raider: Legend on sale for just $19.99 starting today.  The offer is limited to one per customer and it is unknown how long the deal will last.  Tomb Raider: Legend on the PSP is currently selling for $39.99 at Bestbuy and most other gaming outlets.  Lara Croft’s latest has received average reviews by the usual suspects and I have yet to get a hands-on for the PSP version but it looks promising for a $20 investment.  In other Tomb Raider news the remake of the original Tomb Raider that was thought to be cancelled has been confirmed as being back on track for release.

On the Daily Show Wednesday, Jon Stewart handed it to the members of congress who are self confessed gamers yet concerned by the violence in video games. Personally, this clip is above and beyond Jon Stewart’s previous thrashing of Crossfire hosts.  The clip includes some great quotes from congress members, such as Rep. Terry Lee, who facilitates his children’s playing of violent video games yet doesn’t seem to figure out how he can stop it.  Even better are the Pong sound effects provided by Rep. Fred Upton, “bup, bup bip bup.”  To top it off, check out Rep. Joseph Pitts from Pennsylvania,

It’s safe to say that a wealthy kid from the suburbs can play Grand Theft Auto or similar games without turning to a life of crime. But a poor kid who lives in a neighborhood where people really do steal cars or deal drugs or shoot cops might not be so fortunate.

It truly bothers me that this is taking so much time in the government and that parents don’t take a stake in their childrens lives and learn about the games they are buying them.  Back when I worked in retail, more often than not, parents would be upset that we refused to sell an M rated game to their child- end personal rant.  Readers, what are your opinions on the government’s newfound interest in regulating videogames?

Sonic The Hedgehog Title Screen Sonic the Hedgehog, SEGA mascot and one-time rival of Mario, will be celebrating his 15th birthday today. Whether or not you love the little blue blaze, you have to admire Sonic’s contribution to the gaming world in terms of encouraging fast graphics processing and simple, intuitive play mechanics. To milk

celebrate the event, SEGA will be releasing 4 new Sonic-based games this year, including Sonic for the PS3 and Xbox 360 as well as Sonic Wildfire for the Wii, Sonic Rivals for the PSP, and a “special edition” of Sonic the Hedgehog for the GBA.

Sonic’s career has certainly gone a bit downhill in recent years - from the heyday of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Genesis and Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast to the less-favorably-received current-gen Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Riders. Perhaps someday soon we can look forward to a New Super Mario Bros.-esque 3-D/2-D hybrid that will return the little fur ball to his former glory.

Markets  PricewaterhouseCoopers has predicted that the video game market will explode in the next few years. If the prediction holds true the video game industry will outpace the film industry. The rapid adoption of high-speed internet service and wireless infrastructure is giving the video game industry a boost. However, the US market is expected to grow at a slower rate than the Asia Pacific region or the combined territories of Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. The only market the US is expected to outperform is that of Latin America, while the Asia Pacific region is expected to continue to grow at the fastest rate, and retain its current market-leading position. By 2010 the world-wide video game market is expected to reach $46.5 billion.

Victor De Leon Pro Gamer Victor De Leon is living the dream at 8 years old.  Victor is better known as Lil Poison, a Major League Gamer who plays to win in Halo.  Victor picked up the controller from his father at the age of 2 when “Dad” found that a controller makes a fine pacifier.  Victor has already competed in several tournaments and has also earned enough playing video games to ensure his college education is fully funded.  Victor’s parents have done a great job by adding some balance to his life.  He does homework before gaming, puts in some physical activity at his grandparent’s swimming pool and caps off the evening with some team gaming for 2 hours.  Let’s hope getting into the gaming spotlight at such a young age doesn’t disenfranchise Lil Poison.  I don’t want to see a VH1 special in 15 years about child gamers and where they are now!
