DescriptionIGN was able to score an interview with David Ortiz who is currently working on the Madden 07 offering for next gen systems.  Ortiz confirms that Madden 07 will include Superstar mode, which was one of the many features missing from Madden 06 on the Xbox 360.  The new and improved Superstar mode was added after EA heard the complaints of gamers and had already shaped up much of the onfield play.  In the new NFL Superstar Hall of Fame Mode you can control a character from their point of view. You don’t choose the plays, and if your position is on the offense, then you can opt not to play defense.  The changes to the Superstar mode will definitely mix up your play to play role in the game, David Ortiz explains,

Before every drive, you select your role in the scheme. Using the receiver example, you can play as a Possession Receiver, and this will increase your catching ability and the QB accuracy. You can play as a Burner, and this will send you deep, affecting not only your speed and awareness, but it will also negatively affect the rating of the CB trying to cover you one-on-one. Or you can be the Lone Wolf, forgetting about the team game and trying to rack up as many yards and catches as possible. As a cornerback, your roles are Coverage DB, a Blitz Specialist, or again, the Lone Wolf. This all leads to character development and how you’re viewed as a teammate, adding extra depth beyond simply catching passes over the middle or picking off a pass and trying to take it to the house.

The Superstar mode is a much needed addition to the next gen Madden franchise which debuted with a very lackluster Xbox 360 version last fall.  Madden 07 is due out for the Xbox 360 and current gen systems on August 22nd followed shortly by the PS3 release on November 1st.  You can also spend an extra $10 to get the “Hall of Fame” edition which includes a bonus video disc chock full of John Madden!

Mario Hoops 3 Screenshot

Siliconera has a great article up explaining how the controls will work in the upcoming Nintendo DS title Mario Hoops 3 on 3.  Although I am excited about this game, I hadn’t given much thought to the control scheme it will use.  Mario Hoops 3 on 3 uses the touchpad for dribbling, shooting, and stealing the ball as well as performing character specific special shots.  Hopefully Nintendo has implemented this innovative control scheme in a user-friendly manner, as it is unclear what functions will be assigned to the other buttons.  I can only hope Mario Hoops 3 on 3 will be as good as my favorite 3 on 3 classic Tiny Toon Adventures: Acme All-Stars for the Sega Genesis.

BecksIn celebration of England’s first game in this summer’s World Cup tournament there will be a big party in London. The event, sponsored by Microsoft to promote the Xbox’s role as official console of the 2006 World Cup, centers on a huge projector screen that will broadcast the England/Paraguay match live. Visitors to the event can jam to a state-of-the-art sound system, or yell along with cheerleader performances. Microsoft plans similar events for each England (and Australia) game, and expects over 1500 fans to attend the first event this Saturday.

DDR for gym classSchools are finally figuring out that jumping around playing Dance Dance Revolution still counts as exercise, even though you’re staring at a TV. This latest use of DDR is being studied by exercise physiologists at WVU’s school of medicine, who note that early results of the program are “stunning”. 450 students at Suncrest Middle School in Morgantown, W.Va. are currently enrolled in the trial program, which is even receiving a lot of support from the school’s football coach. There are some interesting comparisons in this article, especially the fact that playing DDR for 45 minutes can burn as many calories as running 1-2 miles.

Can we look forward to a day when Samba de Amigo (or Wii Sports or Donkey Konga) plus DDR constitutes a full-body aerobic workout?

MLB 2K6For those gamers with MLB 2K6 on the Xbox 360, a patch has been made available via Xbox Live. Anyone with an Xbox Live Silver or Gold account will be able to download the patch, and users should see a “Title Update” available upon inserting their MLB 2K6 game disc. According to 2K Sports, this was an issue with the HD cache corrupting when users turned off the machine while playing a game, and the issue impacted less than 10% of the user base. There have been mixed reports of success in the 2KSports forums, but some people who still had freezing issues post-patch were able to fix their problem by deleting their downloaded content and starting clean, so it looks like the “uninstall-reinstall” fix so common in the PC world has come to the console world. 2K Sports has not provided information on an alternate method of obtaining the patch for those gamers with an Xbox 360 and no network connection.

2K Sports has posted yet another update in their forums, and they currently have a fix for the MLB 2K6 freezing issue on the Xbox 360 in compliance testing at Microsoft. When the update passes acceptance testing, it should become available as an auto update for all Xbox Live Silver and Gold customers. Other methods of obtaining the patch have not yet been announced, so those users without network-connected Xbox 360 consoles may have to wait a bit longer for an official fix.

Responding to the selection, Alexander was reported as saying “To be on the cover of Madden NFL 07 is a big milestone in my career since I have always been a huge fan of this franchise…EA SPORTS is focusing on the running game in this year’s version, so I was honored when I was chosen to be on the cover to represent the improved running game.” Alexander was selected as NFL MVP, and holds the single-season rushing touchdown record (28). 2KSports posted an update on their official forums, describing a couple of workarounds for the MLB 2K6 freezing issues users are reporting:

In the meantime, our dedicated 2K Sports QA team has tested and confirmed two work-around methods for those consumers who are experiencing the “freeze” issue:

1) Remove or disable the HDD

or,

2) Load three different Xbox 360 games to the main title screen of each game then load Major League Baseball 2K6 on Xbox 360. All three Xbox 360 games must be completely different before loading Major League Baseball 2K6.

Those people with the Xbox 360 hard drive and no memory card to save their games probably won’t find the first solution to be a very good one, and the second is cumbersome to say the least. The 2KSports team is still working on developing an official patch for the game, indicating that there is probably not a media-based issue with the game, but something code-based changed between the review copies and retail versions went out. No mention was made about fixing some of the control issues reported in many of the published reviews for the game.

MLB 2K6

Message boards across the Internet today have been lighting up with reports of freezing problems in the recently released MLB 2K6 for the Xbox 360. IGN’s retail copies of the game are affected, but not their gold review version. So far the reports have been limited to those people with Xbox 360 consoles with the external hard drive, which suggests a software issue and not a media problem. 2K Sports has set up a forum thread to update people on the issue, and have asked all gamers experiencing the issue to contact them at techsupport@2ksports.com with “MLB 2K6 Xbox 360 freeze issue” in the subject.

This makes the third Xbox 360 game in the last few months with enough problems to warrant a fix or patch. With games like Oblivion, this might be expected, but the issue with Dead or Alive 4 should have been caught in either Team Ninja’s test process, or Microsoft’s acceptance testing. Depending on the nature of the MLB 2k6 problem, this may also be an issue that should have been caught. There do seem to be a large number of people complaining, but it is always hard to gauge the ratio of reported issues to shipped product. Still, this seems to be a bad trend, with more and more released Xbox 360 games requiring post release fixes.
